Course Curriculum Overview

5

The course and the curriculum is set in such a manner that, after completing this course, an aspiring Biotechnologist, or a Microbiologist would be equipped with all the basic techniques they would require, to build a base in the fields. The courses are in a credit based system, and the grading is CGPA based. The total number of credits were 121 during my course, it might have varied. The exam details have already been mentioned. The main attractions for me to choose the course was the infrastructure, the labs of the campus, both academic labs and research labs. The second factor was the BRITE Project and finally the college rankings. Amrita Vishwas Vidyapeetham is currently ranked as the No. 1 university in India, with a NAAC A++ accreditation. I am proud to have completed my degree from Amrita, the certificate value is also commentable. The Amrita tag easily fetches jobs

Internships Opportunities

4

Internships are provided by the faculty members depending upon the skills of the students. As previously mentioned, the faculty is very approachable. It is the responsibility of the students to make use of that and approach them. Maintaining a good relationship with the faculties, and showing interest and enthusiasm in their research works can fetch you internships under them during the semester breaks. The projects and outcomes depends upon the faculty(Principal Investigator) and their research work. It varies from person to person. Hostel accomodation can be requested during this period as well, without any additional charges. It is a good opportunity and students should make use of it.

Fees and Financial Aid

The fees I had to pay after clearing the entrance examination organised by Amrita School of Biotechnology, was 63100, per semester for a total of 6 semesters. This was the fees for the students who got in on a merit basis For those who did not clear the entrance and still wanted to get in, they had to pay a total of 100000 Rs, One lakh Rupees, which can be split into six and paid along with the merit fees. That would be 79767 Rupees per semester. Any national lever scholarship is accepted at ASBT, although none were there from my batch.

Campus Life

5

The campus life at Amrita is not just academics. Amrita believes in Education for Life and not education for Living. The difference is that education for Living would get you a job, whereas education for like would not just get you a job, but would also ensure that you know how to live your life. The Student wing of ASBT is called Creatome, the name was coined by one of our esteemed faculty members who was inspired by the creativity of the students and the structure of the Genome. Creatome is one of the most active student clubs to have ever existed in any of the private universities. There are six subwings, Arts, Sports, Science, Literature, Green Initiative and Wellness. Each of these wings have multiple events of their own throughout the year. The main events are Freshers Day, Onam, Diwali, Holi, Farewell, Sci-Hi, ALARM, Phage Week, National Science Day, Kalotsavam, Arts Day, Sports Day, Amma's Birthday, VIDYUT national level Multifest, and Convocation. Every event at Amrita is a celebration of culture, tradition, along with a modern blend. Sci-Hi and ALARM are one of a kind science events, exclusive to Amrita. Each of the student wings have a secretary from the final year BSc and a Joint Secretary from the second year BSc. Creatome has one Chairperson and one Vice Chairperson which is from the MSc final and first years respectively. All the positions are filled through Student Elections conducted each year.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Hostel rooms are decent compared to most places. First year rooms will have 2 - 3 people in one room Second and Final year rooms will have 4 people in one room, and the room size would be much bigger. The washrooms are attached for first year rooms and common for second year and upwards. Registration for hostel is done along with the Admission Only the payment of the hostel fees is additional step. There are separate Gyms for boys and girls, swimming pool, water filters, canteens, laundry services, parks, and gardens for the students in the hostel premises. The Mess food is a fixed schedule, repeated every week. Breakfast items include south indian tiffins such as idlis, dosas, upma, and bread, butter jam. Lunch items are two types of rice, daal, sambar, 4 other curries and chips. Dinner includes Chappathi, any one kind of rice - lemon rice, tomato rice, veg biriyani, pudhina rice, or pulao. Curries will be Paneer, Gobi Manchurian, Veg Kuruma, or any other Veg curry along with a Salad. Tea and Milk is available in the morning, and evening. There'll be a snack or biscut in the evening as well. The food is unlimited and you can eat to your fill. The college hostel is absolutely worth the price. The hostel fees is 66000 rupees per year including all the previlleges. (Subject to change). There will be a caution deposit of 3000 rupees which will be refunded post the completion of the course. Paying Guest facilities are available near the college premises with rents ranging from 7000-10000 rupees per month, depending upon the preferences. The name of the locality is Vallikkavu, Karunagapally, Kerala.

Admission

I chose this college mainly because of the Rankings. Amrita Vishwas Vidyapeetham was ranked No.4 in 2021, and right now it is ranked as the No.1 University in India. The infrastructure of the campus, is also one of the main attractions, along with the labs. I had applied to Madras Christian College, VIT, Manipal, Loyola College and Amity University, and I got accepted to all the colleges I applied. However, with a detailed discussion with my parents, seniors from Amrita, VIT and Manipal, and considering all the factors, I decided to proceed with Amrita. The Admission Process is a systematic procedure First you need to pay the application fees of 1000 rupees and Apply for the Entrance examination. The entrance examination will be conducted in an online mode with remote proctoring. Upon clearing the entrance you will recieve a mail for the interview. The interview is usually conducted in an online mode, via Google meet. There will be 3 panels which simultaneously conducts interviews and you will be allotted to one of them. There will be 7-10 faculty members in each of the panel and you would be asked questions based on your areas of interest, so it is completely upto you what to and what not to expect during the interview. The final results of the interview will be declared through a confirmation mail which will be sent to your Mail ID. After clearing the Interview, you will have to submit the pdf versions of the certificates and the other documents for verification. Once the classes commence, there will be a physical verification of the documents in the first week itself. Failing to produce any of the documents, would lead to termination of the student.

Faculty

4.5

Faculty student ratio would be 1:15 The faculty is very friendly and easily approachable. They are highly qualified, I might even say over qualified for their positions. Almost all the faculty members are researchers, continuing their research at ASBT, in their respective fields of expertise. The exams are conducted twice each semester. One mid semester exam, which is conducted within 1-2 months after the commencement of the semester, which is on a total of 50marks, and the End semester examination, which is conducted, like the name suggests, at the end of the semester. It is conducted on a total of 100marks. 20% is considered from the Mid semester examination and 70% is considered from the end semester examination. The remaining 10% is taken from the assignments and class tests conducted during the semester.

Other Applied Colleges

Vellore Institute of Technology - [VIT University] | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] + Master of Science [M.Sc] (Biotechnology)

First of all, this was an integrated course so I would have to do my Masters in the same college. If I wanted to go abroad, or look for better opportunities, it wouldn't have been possible. In addition to that fact, I got a lot of negative reviews from my

I choose this course because it is rare and it have high potential in national as well international level. But in this college they don't have enough facilities to teach so it won't prepare a student for real-world application. They should include seperate good lab facilities for environmental studies, need permanent teachers and placement activities should be provided. Exams are semester wise and they are easy and easily prepared within short period of time
