Remarks
The college is an absolute delight with the bonding between seniors and juniors being the highlight. While the facilities are top class, maybe the college can separate the hospital and academic wing to separate halves in order to keep the charm intact of both.
Course Curriculum Overview
The MBBS course is absolutely vast with 19 subjects over 4 professional exams and 1 year of hospital internship. This includes clinical rotations from 2nd year onwards and in depth practicals. The only part I find lacking is the lack of emphasis on medical ethics and communication skills, like "breaking the bad news" among others. The exams are held after every semester (9 in total) by the college and 4 professional exams conducted by the University over the course of the study. They include practicals, viva, demonstration as well as combination of short and long question based theory paper.
Placement Experience
Since we graduate as doctors, we either opt for specialisiation or go for jobs in hospitals as junior doctors. Our college provides 1 year of compulsory internship with a monthly stipend of 20,000 rupees. The experience is overwhelming as being a tertiary care hospital, the practical knowledge gained is immense. We undertake night shifts in the casualties to learn the nuances of emergency.
College Events
We celebrate teachers day, the national holidays as well as national doctors day and world health day. The annual fest, the intermedics every 3 years and competitions organised by the Union throughout the year keep the tempo up. We have monthly seminars and symposiums addressed by doctors from our college and beyond on various emerging health hazards. Quiz session and literary club meetings are commonly held ever month
Fee Structure And Facilities
Being a government institution, the fee structure is meagre 3000/-per year (tution fees) and hostel fees of about 30000 annually with additional mess charges calculated on daily basis. Perhaps that's the cheapest one can get to study MBBS anywhere.
Fees and Financial Aid
Our college doesn't provide any scholarship on its own. But the state government provides Medhabi- scholarship to families under a specified income limit. I personally didn't avail any as didn't meet the income criteria but a lot of PSU too provide scholarships to students of MBBS at large which my friends have availed.
Campus Life
There isn't much scope for extra curriculum activities per say. But there is a annual fest organised by the students union in the grandest of manner and college life turns happening then. With a plethora of activities lined up on the field, on the stage, soft skills ranging from literary events to fine arts, from team sports to individual events and ofcourse the Star nights.
Hostel Facilities
Being a local student, I didn't opt for hostel, but can rate the hostel infrastructure as average. The newer ones are congested but we'll maintained by the older ones are spacious but badly managed. There are constant complains of water leakage, parking issues, etc
Alumni/Alumna
Absolutely. We learn the best of tricks, the best of care from our seniors. The bonding is homely, and great sense of fraternity exists between the alumni as well as seniors juniors. From teaching juniors before exams to lending books, seniors are the go to men before exams. The union also makes sure to stand up for every student of the college in times of need.
Admission
I had to clear NEET 2017 with fairly good marks as the college is one of the best medical colleges in Eastern India. I was admitted through the 85%state quota(odisha) through online counselling by OJEE portal. Once a separate state merit list is out from the NEET marks, you get to select as many options one is interested in and gets the college as per the rank. There are total 3 rounds of counselling.
Faculty
Absolutely phenomenal, the best in the field and with the utmost dedication. They lay emphasis on students understanding the mechanisms well as well going for further research using the vast resources at disposal in the college library.
