The truth about the hype of IITs

Overall, IIT is not just about studying all life and making it to IITs and become a nerd. IIT provides a whole new way of life after coming to the college. It is the top ranked college in India in the QS Rankings. The fest is one of the best in the country. No wonder, its acceptance rate is 5,000 in 12 lakh. Do the math.

The course curriculum is quite high in standard from other engineering colleges but the same problem as the education system exists in IITs too. The course syllabus has not changed for the past 20-30 years. Resulting in things we end up learning are of no use anywhere with all the MATLAB programs out there. There are 3 exams in a semester. Minor-1, minor-2 and major with usually 25-25-50 weightage. Other than these there may be 2-week long assignments in mostly programming.

The placement and internship opportunities are really great here with companies from all around the world coming to the campus to hire students aggressively. Yes there is an intern season just like the job season. As I write this review, the companies are on the campus and I have been shortlisted in some great companies such as Microsoft, Samsung, etc. Wish me luck in the interviews.

IIT Delhi has really been in the front in the cultural front too. Rendezvous, IIT Delhi's cultural fest is probably the largest one in India of its kind with a footfall of over 1,00,000. We have celebrities from Bollywood, Hollywood, sports, edm, etc perform in our Open Air Theater. Also there is Tryst, IIT Delhi's Technical Fest which is also quite popular among the tech firms sponsoring the whole even themselves. Huge cash prizes are given to the winners of tech competitions.

It is quite expensive. Tuition fee is 1.10 lakh per semester. Also the hostel fee is 30-40k per semester. There are quite a few relaxations for people from weaker economic societies and backward classes.

There is a loan scheme which I have heard of. A friend of mine has been availing it since the first semester. I dont have a lot of idea about it. But i guess, this is a good initiative and really has helped.

The extracurricular activities are extensively followed here with world class facilities like a sound proof music room and instruments, wellness room for yoga equipped with air purifiers. The labs are really great with some.state of the art equipments. The sports facility is one of the best among all the colleges probably with Olympic sized swimming pools, 8 tennis courts, cricket ground with flood lights.

IIT Delhi has some phenomenal alumni base with likes of Vinod Khosla, Flipkart founders, Raghuram Rajan, Chetan Bhagat, etc. Some of them keep on visiting the campus and make donations to the hostel funds and are very approachable.

Th process for selection to IITs involves 2 steps. The first one is JEE(Joint Entrance Exam)-Mains with about 12 lakh sitting for the exam. The next step is JEE Advanced with a Common Rank List result giving you the college and stream according to you rank and cumbersome councilling process.

The faculty is really well-versed with the subject they are to teach and are quite experienced. No wonder, they are probably one of the best minds from their generation in India or maybe the world. Although, the general traits of the teacher vary from person to person but most of them are quite friendly and are open to help if they are free.
