Remarks
The most positive things for me was great social life>better location>good placement and education (mark my words, these matter the most at the end of the day! ). A big negative remark for campus, canteen/hostel facilities and competitive sports and activities outside the college and.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am a B. Tech. graduate in Electrical Engineering. Our college is affiliated to the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal (MAKAUT) (formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology or WBUT) and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). First of all it is just another state university, so don't make the mistake to compare the curriculum with one of it's equivalent of the premium institutions like the IITs or NITs. Yet it is considered as one of the best in West Bengal. There's indeed some impressive colleges (both govt. and private) but most of the constituent colleges are not up to that mark. In my opinion the currently the UG course curriculum is good but has ample scopes of improvement. Firstly, it needs upgradation. It has less emphasis on practicals and industry-specific training materials. Secondly, it is also less flexible i.e. we don't have much elective choices for subjects and even though in many cases we do have choices but colleges can't provide separate faculties that results in cut down in number of choices. As many complain about the irrelevance of subjects we are taught in first years in the name of basics and fundamentals of engineering I too think as the same. There's quite a lot of stuff we are to learn which has hardly any use other than passing semester exams. Instead of involving students in more number of unproductive microprjects /ppts/assignments universities like MAKAUT should look into enriching the syllabus. I personally observed many students go for paid courses outside university curriculum for learning subjects like: Microcontroller/ PLC-SCADA technology/AutoCAD and digital designing/ Electrical Installations/ Machine designing which can be easily included in the curriculum itself as sub-disciplines of industrial applications. In contrast to our expectation for jobs from core sectors (like: power generation/manufacturing/maintenance/processing/designing), we mostly get placed at IT sector or Sales&Marketing related jobs. But sorry to say there's very few Institutes which make serious efforts to 'train' or 'groom' students from an early stage (whether in means of programming/problem-solving/communication/management skills). With lot many efforts they make to improve the attendance (I mean 75%!? Isn't that way too much of a demand? Colleges should introduce distance learning facilities and digital libraries instead, so that students can do their studies even at home or workplace. ) as well as marks of students, somewhere they are missing the quality of learning. The exam structure is as follows: 1. No. of semesters = 8 (2 in a year, named as odd and even) 2. No. of subjects per semester= it varies, usually 5-6 theory papers, 3-4 practical papers 3. For each subject, in each semester, students are to appear for 2 internal exams (full marks : 25; earlier it was 15). Students are marked out of 30 based on the average internal marks , assignments/microprojects submission and class attendance.Theory exams of the same subjects are written ones, of F. M. s of 70. 4. For practical subjects the scheme is : 30 (for overall semester performance) +70 (for Lab performance and Viva-voce session on the day of exam). 5. Marks obtained out of 100 for each subjects then are converted in Points (out of 10) as well as Letter Grades and from there to Credit Points (=Points*Subject Credits). 6. Semester Grade Point Average is calculated by dividing the sum of all Credit Points or simply Total Credit Index by total Credits. 7. Other GPA (like: YGPA/DGPA) structures as well as the rules for Letter Grades will be always mentioned behind the university issued grade cards.
Placement Experience
Being one of the oldest of its kind, BPPIMT stands tall among other comparable institutions in WB with some impressive placement records over the years. Currently Infosys Ltd., CTS are the mass recruiters. From last few years Wipro Ltd., Capgemini, EY, Amazon, BYJU's, are among the foremost IT Service and Marketing giants regularly recruiting from our college. Lot many got offers and already been working at companies like TCS, Tech Mahindra, IBM, Ericsson, Genpact etc. There have been offers from core companies like Adani Gas, Manikaran Power Ltd. etc. recently but those numbers are significantly less. Internships at pre-placement scenarios are mostly done by students on their own interest. College has very less contribution in such fields. Same goes for industrial trainings for 3rd year students. After placements, some companies do involve their fresh recruits for internship programmes which usually happens during the 7th and 8th semesters. Average packages offered is around 3-3.5 lakhs PA. Lastly as a former student, I think there is need of improvement in communication between students/department ends (placement representatives) and Training and Placement Cell.
College Events
1. Annual Sports 2. Inter-/Intra-college Cricket/Football/Chess tournaments 3. Indoor games tournaments : Chess/Table Tennis/ Carrom 4.Socio-cultural Fest : 'Elixir' (once in every 4 years, 3-5 days long fest full of events under bunch of groovy names, dance-drama-singing-photography-fashion-music bands competitions with exciting prizes, DJ nights and a whole lot of entertainments by professional performers.thats all you need at one place! ) 5. Language Fest : 'The Panache' (includes debates/creative writing/graffiti/instant acting/word-games/puzzles as 'Treasure-Hunt' etc. ) and Inter-college Technical Fest : 'Techstorm' (robotics and related events). Both are hold every year. 6. Departmental Quiz and Debate competitions 7. Saraswati Puja, Vishwakarma Puja celebration 8. Environmental/ Health awareness campaigns by NSS and other departments That is nearly all about the list of events and activities performed here in BPPIMT.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Expensive - compared to govt. colleges. Feasible - compared to other private engineering colleages. The average semester fees for our 2015-2019 batch was around 39k, average course fees nearly about 3.6-4 lakhs. There may be a change in fee structure recently which I may be unaware of. Better check the official websites.
Fees and Financial Aid
A regular TFW (Tution Fee Waiver) is applicable for eligible students under WBFS scheme. I heard about some sort of loan facilities is also there for students from minority communities, but I have no specific ideas about those. I personally never availed any scholarship or loans from this college.
Campus Life
Students and departments are motivated towards different extracurricular activities like sports (outdoor and indoor kind), performing arts competitions etc. But with almost no space within campus (literally one has to consider the premises of surrounding housing-complex as the only campus area!) and small auditoriums/activity rooms the college itself play as a major setback for organising such events. All kinds of outdoor sports are held at fields miles away from the college campus. Computer labs, Physics and Chemistry dept. and Humanities labs (some are completely air conditioned!) are quite good. Electrical / Electronics engineering labs, Tools & Carpentry workshop are ones which needs more spaces, protective gears latest machines and scopes for virtual labs/ projectors etc.
Hostel Facilities
One real big issue is that there isn't any decent hostels. The Institute do run one boys' hostel and one girls' hostel run whose details are there in the websites. Hostel infrastructure is just basic or below average sometimes. Students prefer residing as paying guests elsewhere at higher rates rather than staying at hostels.
Alumni/Alumna
One alumni network is there definitely. Other than being in social networking sites I have only seen them organizing quiz cotests, taking part in sports Seldom they arrange students/teacher interactive sessions regarding memberships/ entrepreneurship career opportunities etc.
Admission
I appeared for WBJEE 2015 and secured 19019 rank (GN). I registered myself for the e-counselling process conducted by WBJEE board and there we had to submit a preference-wise choice-list of colleges. The counseling is of three stages(rounds) where at the end of each stage each of the candidates will be given an allotment one has to either confirm his/her allotment or he/she may go for a possible upgradation. I got B. P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology for the stream EE at the end of second round of seat-allotment. One must have clear knowledge about one's preferences of institutes and streams-offered (go through detailed informations about the same on internet. You might check the recent placement records/reviews about the faculties and departments/campus-hostel-canteen facilities/distance from your residence etc.) because process of seat-allotment is irreversible. I was satisfied with what I got so I confirmed my allotment. Afterthat we were given certain dates for submission of confirmation details and other mentioned documents which we had to complete at respective regional offices or reporting centres (RCs) (mine was at Serampore). There we got our admission dates for respective colleges. I visit my college main office which is at Park Street on the day of admission. Further procedures of admission were as per the instructions of college authority.
Faculty
In BPPIMT, we got fairly decent quality faculties in almost every subjects regardless the departments. There's quiet a lot of teachers who have PhDs, Industrial experiences apart from there Masters degrees. Yet especially in electrical engineering, that number is less comparatively and that indeed reflects in our results and faculty experiences. Other than electrical, students who go for CSE/IT/ECE, don't have to worry a lot about faculties. And coming to the non-technical departments (i.e. Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Humanities), believe me, very few private engineering colleges under MAKAUT has such excellent faculties that we got here. They are simply awesome! I don't know much about the MCA department. Interested people may have a quick check on the internet.
