Deshbandhu College:A Short Journey

Everything in the world has prons and cons.The college also has some drawbacks. It lacks in availability of water in summer after 12.00 PM. There exist no big ground so that students can play games like Cricket, Football etc.Rooms of Porta Block are like Sun in summers and Siachen glacier in winters. At the time of Student Union's election, several cases of fights between two or more groups are reported. Their loud chanting of slogans disturb the classes In my whole second semester , a teacher for AECC was not appointed. Non teaching staffs are not punctual.Some times students have to wait for paper work for long.

The curriculum of the college is based on Choice Based Credit Scheme(CBCS).The three year course comprises six semesters.Exams are conducted semester wise.In first year i.e. in first two semesters one has to study 4 papers per semester including two core ,one generic elective and one Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course.(AECC) paper.Generic elective subject is chosen by student.It must be other than the core subject.AECC comprises of two subjects English and Environmental Science one in each semester.In second year, number of papers increases to five.One core paper is added and AECC is replaced by Skill Enhancement Course(SEC).In B.Sc Mathematics Hons., SEC includes study of computer languages like LATEX,R,MATLAB etc.Meanwhile,a student can change her generic elective subject if she wish to.In final year one has to study all four core papers. Every semester one paper consists of practicals also.College charge about 1000 rupees as exam fee per semester which is not included in tuition fee. Exams of odd semesters are conducted in November-December and that of evem semesters are conducted in May- June which is followed by two months summer break. According to me,the curriculum is up to the mark.The books prescribed are of famous authors and are easily available. Inclusion of AECC and SEC in the curriculum makes it more effective.The papers are quite interesting which increases curiousity of students towards the subject.

The college has separate placement cell for jobs and internships.They conduct interviews for the selection of students in the cell.Students of third year are eligible for the same.Different companies come over and select students according to their interest.Placement cell act as a bridge between companies and students.

Every year an annual fest naming SABRANG is celebrated in the college.It is a two day programme which consists of series of events.It includes singing competition ,dance competition , drama, poems etc. in which different colleges participate. A bollywood celebrity is invited every year to the fest which enhancing it's beauty. Apart from it, every department celebrates it's own fest which can be of a day or two.For instance,the name of fest of Mathematics department is SAMUCHYAYAM which is a two day programme.They have their own series of events in which students show their talents and win exciting prizes. More than that, many awareness programs like blood donation camp are held on regular intervals.Also professors from all over the world,who are master in their subjects are invited for special lectures.

Fee is moderate.In first year the fee was 9750 rupees.It included maintainance fee, library fee, tuition fee etc.It was increased to 14500 in second year.There were several strikes against the fee hike in which teachers and students altogether participated.The facilities provided by the college is upto the mark.There is always a scope of improvement but facilities provided by the institutions justifies the fee and hence we can say that the fee is neither expensive nor cheap.

The college provides different scholarships on the basis of merit and course.On academic level, students from various departments like Mathematics, English, Commerce etc can get scholarships if she fulfills all the criteria.For example, students from Maths first year can get benefits of Baba Sohan Singh Memorial Scholarship which includes an amount of rupees 480. College also provide scholarships in other areas like sports , music , drama etc. The college has a provision of fee concession of almost 20 percent of total students every year.

Apart from academics , the college has good environment for extracurricular activities.Sports is one of them.Archery is the key sports in the college which is practiced by the students with complete dedication. College has its Volley-Ball court and a separate room from where one can get sporting goods on the submission of Identity Cards.At the start of session, trials of every sports is conducted to select the team of that particular sport. The college also has a separate gym where on can do excerise. There are separate societies for dance and music which selects students at the start of session and after that organises events on regular intervals. National Service Scheme(NSS) and National Cadet Core(NCC) is very active in our college.NSS keeps checking the cleanliness of the college.They act as watchdogs in terms of cleanliness.They also organise blood donation camp for the help of needed ones. For the practicals,the college has separate labs for every subject.For example, there are Physics labs, Chemistry Labs, Maths Lab, Computer science Lab, Botany And Zoology Lab etc.The labs has enough equipments and tools required in the practicals.A lab assistant is always there to assist students in doing their practicals. In Mathematics and Computer Science lab, there are about 100 computers each with every required programming language installed in it.

Hostel facilities are absent in the college.Students coming from outside face many problems in finding a place to stay.They get private hostels whose rate is very high and they provide very unhygienic food.

Recently , the news anchor of NDTV Ravish Kumar got the Ramon Magsaysay award and I feel proud to share that he is the alumni of our college.Gulshan Kumar, the founder of T-Series is also the alumni of Deshbandhu College. Seniors of the college are very helpful.Instead of going home in the vacations, they help students in admission processes.They guide the freshers in getting books and inform them about the classes.Fresher party is organised every year by the department's seniors.

Deshbandhu College is a constituent college of University Of Delhi.Every year university releases cut-offs based on the 12th marks for the admission to under graduate courses.Some courses' cutoffs require Best of Three while some require Best of Four.For instance,I got admission to B.Sc Mathematics Hons. on the Best of Four basis.My Best of Four percentage was 92 which included the marks of English,Mathematics,Physics and Chemistry.A language's marks is necessary in calculating the aggregate cut off.I got admitted in third cut off.On average 8 to 10 cut offs are released every year.For admission to many other courses like journalism ,B.tech from Information Technology etc the university conducts entrance exam.

The professors of college are associated with prestigious institutions like IIT, IISC, Delhi University itself and many other.They are master in their subjects and hence are the guiding lights for students.They barely miss the classes, conducts doubt sessions on every topic and focus on clearing the concept.They provide every possible help to the students.
