Indian students with a confirmed university offer in the UK, US, or Europe have six days to apply for one of India's most prestigious fully-funded study abroad grants. The Inlaks Scholarship 2026 closes on March 31, 2026 at 12:00 PM IST — and the Foundation has never granted an extension. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, one-way travel, visa costs, and a health allowance, up to a maximum of USD $120,000 (approximately ₹1 crore). Since its founding, the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation has supported over 600 scholars across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences — making it the single largest privately-funded study abroad grant available exclusively to Indian nationals.

With the US, UK, and Canada all tightening visa access and raising costs for Indian students in 2026, the Inlaks Scholarship offers a rare route to fully-funded overseas study — with no bond, no service obligation, and no restriction on accepting other awards or part-time work alongside it.

Inlaks Scholarship 2026 Closes March 31

What the Inlaks Scholarship Covers

The scholarship is not a fixed amount — it is calculated based on the actual cost of the course chosen, up to the USD $120,000 ceiling.

Component Coverage
Tuition fees Covered (up to the USD $120,000 limit)
Living expenses Covered (adequate amount for the destination)
One-way travel to destination Covered
Visa costs Covered
Health allowance Covered
Return travel Not covered
Course fees above USD $120,000 Applicant must show proof of additional funds

In INR terms: USD $120,000 = approximately ₹1.002 crore at current exchange rates

Duration: The scholarship covers courses of 9 months to 4 years in length — from one-year Master's programmes to multi-year doctoral degrees.

Important: The Foundation does not restrict scholars from accepting other awards, assistantships, or part-time job opportunities alongside the Inlaks grant. If your course costs exceed USD $120,000, you must submit proof of additional funding at the time of application — not after shortlisting.

If your subject is not on the exclusion list, it is eligible. When in doubt, email the Foundation at applications@inlaksfoundation.org before applying.

The Selection Process — What Happens After March 31

The Inlaks selection process has three stages. Understanding the timeline helps applicants plan around it:

Stage When What Happens
Stage 1: Application review April 2026 Independent Inlaks Selection Committee reviews all eligible applications
Stage 2: Online preliminary interviews Around May 2026 Shortlisted candidates invited for online interviews
Stage 3: Final in-person interview 3rd or 4th weekend of May 2026 Final candidates interviewed in Mumbai
No communication deadline By April 30, 2026 If you hear nothing by April 30, your application has not progressed

Key point: Candidates are assessed not only on past academic achievement but on future potential — the committee looks for evidence of what the applicant will contribute after returning to India. Applicants for arts and design scholarships are primarily assessed on their portfolios.

The Foundation appoints an independent selection committee — not internal staff — to evaluate applications. This means the process is blind to institutional affiliations and focuses purely on merit and motivation.

What to Submit — Application Checklist

Applications are submitted online at onlineapplication.inlaksfoundation.org. Only one submission per candidate is permitted.

Mandatory documents:

  • Valid Indian passport copy (first and last pages)

Why This Scholarship Matters in 2026

The Inlaks Scholarship has always been competitive — but its value has grown significantly in the current environment. Consider what USD $120,000 covers in 2026:

Destination Typical 1-Year Master's Total Cost Inlaks Coverage
UK (London, Russell Group) £35,000–£45,000 (₹36.8–47.3L) Fully covered within limit
USA (top-ranked programme) 55,000–80,000 (₹45.9–66.8L) Fully covered within limit
Europe (France, Germany, Netherlands) €15,000–€30,000 (₹16.4–32.7L) Fully covered within limit

For a two-year programme at a top US university — where total costs can reach 100,000–120,000 — the Inlaks grant covers the entire cost. For Indian students who cannot access US F-1 visas (down 69% for Indians in summer 2025) or UK Graduate Route (being cut to 18 months from January 2027), a fully-funded scholarship removes the financial barrier entirely and makes the visa case significantly stronger.

The scholarship also carries no bond or return-to-India obligation — though the Foundation's stated mission is to develop scholars who will contribute positively to their environment, which in practice means most scholars do return.
