What Students Say
Likes
- Management for computer science is really good, when i face any problem, they solve that same day also if i have other problems like in visa or other related things then they have student union where they support the student and give us resolution.
- The university also provide us support in Healthcare, they have dedicated UHS (university health service) they have tied up with NHS and we get appointment on the same day and also it's really good for students.
- They have all the equipments me for students if they want camera, mic, laptops, computers to use, they gave us for free in rent for few days.
Dislikes
- The building is far away, like if I have one class from 12 PM to 2 PM in The Diamond building then they give another class from 2 PM to 4 PM at another building like The Regent Court building which is 10 minutes walk from that building.
Course Curriculum
- My course is difficult if someone doesn't know the basics of cybersecurity and maths. It's mixed with theory and practice, but I must say it is highly practical.
- Most negative, I'll say the lectures start from basic as we are master's student we need advanced and in-depth knowledge. But it goes to the deep till ending of that course. The most positive aspect was the practical labs, which I love the most, where I practice ethical hacking, and they also provide licensed tools to practice.
- In a day, there were only one or two classes scheduled. And the average time of the classes was 2 hours maximum.
- There were many indian students in my course. If there are 50 students, then 10 will be indians and 25 from china and then the rest from the UK and other countries.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to the following universities:
- The University of Sheffield - Accepted
- Queen Mary University of London - Accepted
- The University of Manchester - Accepted
- University of Salford - Accepted
- University of Hertfordshire - Accepted
- I applied only in this three Universities as per my profile and experience. I didn't get any rejections from those colleges. But due to the low ranking of other universities, I didn't apply to more.
- First of all, I chose this university because of the world ranking, and when I searched for the other two universities, I found that the management and support are not much better, but on the other hand The University of Sheffield's management and support are really good. Also, my elder brother graduated from this university and got his job at Rolls-Royce as a Data Analyst within a few months, and he also told me that Sheffield is really good for students.
- The admission process was really easy; the university helped us in each and every part of the admission process. If I am unaware of something, then they have their online chat system. From India, I had asked them many questions in their online chat support, and they helped me instantly. They also provided me CAS letter within 2 days, and the application process was really smooth. I just have to click next and see the pre-filled details, that's it.
- For admission, they needed 6.5 in IELTS or PTE, I think overall 63 marks out of 100. So I gave PTE test and got an overall 70 marks out of 100, and it was pretty easy.
- Overall, my admission process till visa was really a great experience, I can say. I really love this university, I have really good memories with faculties and students.
- I applied on September intake 2024, because that's the main intake to apply, and in the January intake, my course was not available. They only take September intake admissions for that course as it's high in demand now.
- If I talk about the admission process time, then it took me approx 2-3 months because I was waiting for my bachelor's degree results. I applied for this course in February 2024 and got an acceptance letter within 3 days. Then, I was waiting for my bachelor's results, and when I got those, I applied for a CAS letter, and I got that letter also within a few days. The process was fast and easy. On August 27th, I applied for a priority visa, then on 31st August, I got an email in the morning that my passport had been couriered to my home address.
Faculty
- Student ratio in my opinion was high, in a few classes the Students are combined from the AI course (that's the separate course they provide), because of that, the students reach 100+
- But of course, the team methods are really good; I learned a lot from the professors related to cybersecurity. They also helped me after my dissertation to secure a part-time internship. They also offered me an internship on-campus with them.
- I admire Professor Gergely Buday the most; he helped me a lot in my entire MSc program. Starting from the lecture to the dissertation project, and also for giving LOR to companies for my internship.
Campus Life
- My campus experience at Sheffield was lively with events, fests, clubs, and many extracurricular activities. The University has several campuses, such as Western Bank, Engineering, St George’s, and the Health Sciences area.
- We had great facilities, including the IC, the Diamond, sports centres, and UHS. Popular events like Varsity, HackSheffield, and cultural nights made student life exciting, along with sports teams, societies, and volunteering activities.
Part Time Jobs
- My campus and off-campus opportunities at Sheffield were quite good. Many students apply for TA, RA, or DA roles, but only a limited number secure them because positions depend on department funding and course needs. The pay is generally strong, ranging from about £17 to £22 per hour. Besides these roles, there are other on-campus jobs such as library support, IT helpdesk, catering, student ambassador roles, and part-time work at the Students’ Union.
- These usually pay within the same hourly range. The university allows 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours during holidays like Christmas. Getting an on-campus job is competitive, especially in the first semester, but it becomes easier once you gain UK experience, build networks, and apply early.
- Most Indian students, including myself, usually work part-time in stores or the hospitality sector, especially in catering roles where the pay is around £12.21 per hour. Finding part-time work can be competitive in the first few months, but it gets easier once you understand the local job market.
- The usual process is to search for openings on platforms like Indeed, university job portals, or by visiting local stores. We submit a CV, sometimes a cover letter, and then attend short interviews or trials. Once you gain some UK experience and apply early, securing a part-time job becomes much more manageable.
Placement
- Full-time opportunities after my course were strong, especially in AI, cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering. From what I observed, a good percentage of my batch, around 70–80% students, secured roles within six months, depending on their skill set and job search effort. The typical starting salary range for graduates was roughly £35,000 to £50,000 per year, with some roles in cybersecurity and ML engineering going even higher.
- Most students found jobs through online portals like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, or the University’s career service, as well as from sites like poly. Job, Networking, attending career fairs, completing internships, and connecting with alumni also played a major role. Some got opportunities through referrals or by engaging in industry projects during the course.
- My batchmates and a few seniors to whom I talk joined a variety of companies in roles such as cybersecurity analyst, SOC analyst, data scientist, ML engineer, software engineer, penetration tester, and cloud engineer. Companies included Amazon, Deloitte, PwC, HSBC, BT, Rolls-Royce, NHS Digital, local UK startups, and several tech consultancies. The University of Sheffield has a solid reputation, so many well-known organisations actively hire graduates from AI and cybersecurity programmes.
Accommodation
- I found accommodation online through google search, and the monthly rent is approx 370 pounds. I didn't face any issues while securing the accommodation; it was really easy to book that and get the agreement.
- I have one Recommendation for future students: if you are coming to the University of Sheffield, then try to book near that University; otherwise, you have to walk too much. Also, try to book IQ Fenton, Westhill Hall, or aspect3, Central Place, etc. These accommodations are really close to the university, and you have to walk only 5 to 10 minutes.
- My accommodation is just 5 minutes' walk from the university. Most Indian students stay in IQ Fenton, Westhill Hall, or Aspect3, Student Roost, the central place.
Exams
- I had given PTE English test as it was mandatory for this course. There was also an exceptional case for a few students from a few states who got 90% in English in their 12th standard from state boards like Maharashtra; they gave them an acceptance letter without any English test.
- There was no interview part happened not at the time of application, nor at the time of visa application.
Fees
- Tuition fees were 31,500 pounds, and I got a scholarship of 5,000 pounds. And we have to pay this amount in two installments. First in November and second in February, and we can extend these fee payments till May or June.
- For student accommodation, I paid approx 5,500 pounds for a year, and it was a really good experience in accommodation because we get every facilities needed for students, and the rooms were also pretty good.
- For transportation, I always prefer the bus as it is cheaper; for one ride, it costs me 1.5 pounds to get anywhere I go. And monthly groceries cost approx 50 to 60 pounds, depend upon you make food at home or eat outside. Because outside it's expensive.
Scholarship
- There were two scholarship options I had at the time of application, the first was a scholarship of 2,500 pounds for every student, and the second was 5,000 pounds for only specific students whose profile is good. I got that scholarship because my profile was good as per their admission requirements.
- That 5,000 scholarship is for 2000 students only, as per my knowledge.
