IGNOU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 4 Reviews

The BA course at IGNOU does not require a Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GDPI) for admission, unlike the MBA and other courses. Such sessions, when necessary, are conducted at study centers primarily on weekends. The faculty is experienced, maintaining a favorable faculty-to-student ratio of 1:50. The history and political science departments receive particular praise for their comprehensive teaching approach. Students must submit assignments for 8 subjects as part of their annual exams, which occur twice a year.

A positive faculty-student relationship aids in successful exam preparation, supported by online classes. IGNOU offers affordable fees, with the BA (History) Program costing 4,400 Rupees annually, plus examination fees of 1,600 Rupees (200 per subject). Additional monthly tuition fees are 250 Rupees, with other charges totaling 750 Rupees. Scholarships and financial aid are available for specific courses, especially for minority and differently-abled students. However, due to the distance learning format, traditional placement services are not provided.

After the first year, students may access internships and job opportunities with companies like Insurance Dekho, Car Dekho, Air India SATS, and APTARA, in roles such as Health and Life Insurance Advisors, Tele Sales, Data Entry Operators, Customer Executives, Copy Editors, and Technical Writers. Companies like APTAR, ARIS0-E, and GLOBIVA also participate in providing job and internship opportunities. IGNOU's well-researched courses and study materials equip students to create job opportunities and pursue further studies like an MBA or MA.

Despite the lack of placement services, the college's affordability, resource availability, and nearby exam centers are highly appreciated by students.

IGNOU BA (History) FAQs

Ques. Is IGNOU BA (History) useful for UPSC or State PSC preparation?

Ans. Yes, IGNOU BA (History) is widely considered one of the best choices for civil services aspirants. History is one of the most popular optional subjects in UPSC Mains, and the IGNOU BAHIH curriculum closely aligns with the UPSC syllabus. Many UPSC toppers have recommended IGNOU History books as reference material. The flexibility of distance learning also allows aspirants to study simultaneously for competitive exams without the pressure of regular college attendance.

Ques. What subjects/courses are covered in IGNOU BA (History)?

Ans. The BAHIH programme covers 14 core History courses (BHIC 101 to BHIC 114) spanning ancient India, medieval India, modern India, world history, and historiography. Additionally, students choose Discipline Specific Electives (DSEs) from options like BHIE 141-145 (covering topics such as history of modern Europe, history of China and Japan, etc.), along with Ability Enhancement Courses, Skill Enhancement Courses, and Generic Electives from other disciplines.

Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU BA (History) if I have a gap year after Class 12?

Ans. Yes, IGNOU has no restriction on gap years. There is no upper age limit for admission, and students who completed Class 12 several years ago are equally eligible to apply. This makes IGNOU BA (History) particularly popular among working adults and those who could not pursue higher education immediately after school.

Ques. How are assignments evaluated in IGNOU BA (History)?

Ans. Assignments in IGNOU are Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). For each course, you need to submit one TMA per semester/year to your Study Centre. The assignment carries 30% weightage in the final grade, while the Term-End Examination carries 70% weightage. Assignments must be submitted before the TEE to be eligible to appear in the exam.

Ques. Is the IGNOU BA (History) degree accepted for government jobs and higher studies?

Ans. Yes, IGNOU is a Central University recognised by UGC, and its degrees are fully valid for government jobs, higher education (MA, B.Ed., etc.), and other purposes. The Distance Education Bureau (DEB) of UGC recognises IGNOU's ODL programmes. Many government job notifications explicitly accept IGNOU degrees.

Ques. What is the difference between IGNOU BA (History) and a regular BA History from another university?

Ans. The core difference is the mode of study - IGNOU BA (History) is a distance learning programme with no mandatory daily classes, while a regular BA requires physical attendance. The curriculum and degree value are comparable. IGNOU's CBCS-based BAHIH programme is academically rigorous and recognised at par with regular degrees. However, students who prefer classroom interaction and campus life may find regular college more suitable.
