IGNOU BASOH FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between BASOH (BA Hons Sociology) and BAFSO (BA Sociology) at IGNOU?

Ans. BASOH is an Honours programme with a deeper and more intensive focus on Sociology as the major subject, following the NEP 2020 framework. BAFSO is a general BA with Sociology as the major subject but with slightly less depth. BASOH is better suited for students planning to pursue MA Sociology, NET/SET, or academic research, while BAFSO is ideal for general learners and government job aspirants.

Ques. Is IGNOU BA (Hons) Sociology degree valid for NET/SET and teaching positions?

Ans. Yes, the BASOH degree is fully recognized by UGC and AIU. After completing BASOH, graduates can pursue MA Sociology and then appear for UGC-NET/SET to qualify for Assistant Professor positions. The Honours degree is generally preferred over a general BA for higher academic pursuits.

Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU BA (Hons) Sociology while working a full-time job?

Ans. Absolutely. The programme is designed for self-paced, distance learning with no mandatory attendance. You only need to submit assignments twice a year and appear for Term End Examinations (TEE) in June and December. Many working professionals, social workers, and NGO employees pursue this programme to upgrade their qualifications.

Ques. Does IGNOU BA (Hons) Sociology include any fieldwork or project component?

Ans. The BASOH programme is primarily theoretical and assessment-based (TMAs and TEE). However, some courses may include project work or practical components depending on the curriculum. Students should check the specific course structure on the IGNOU website for details on any project requirements.

Ques. Is Sociology a good subject for UPSC Civil Services preparation?

Ans. Yes, Sociology is one of the most popular optional subjects in UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination due to its relatively concise and well-defined syllabus. IGNOU's Sociology study material is widely used by UPSC aspirants. Pursuing BASOH can help build a strong conceptual foundation for the UPSC Sociology optional.

Ques. After completing IGNOU BA (Hons) Sociology, what are the best career options?

Ans. Graduates can pursue MA Sociology (from IGNOU or other universities), B.Ed. for teaching, or prepare for UPSC/State PSC exams with Sociology as an optional subject. Career options include Sociology teacher/lecturer (after MA and NET/SET), social worker, NGO professional, HR professional, journalist, policy researcher, and civil services officer.

Ignou is a best way for distance education in very low fee structure. When I applied for Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) I was really shocked because there is only 5000 rupees per year fees of this bachelor course. So that's why I want to suggest to all the middle class family students to join and take admission in IGNOU for your better future and low fees.
