Ques. Is CUET Urdu paper mandatory for admission to BA (Hons.) Urdu at JMI? Can I apply without Urdu in Class 12?
Ans. Yes, admission to BA (Hons.) Urdu at JMI is through CUET UG score in the Urdu paper (Code: 113). You must appear for the Urdu paper in CUET UG 2026. While having Urdu as a subject in Class 12 is beneficial, the eligibility requires 50% aggregate marks in Class 12 or 50% in Urdu as a subject. Students who have not studied Urdu formally may find the course challenging as it is taught in Urdu medium.
Ques. What career options are available after BA (Hons.) Urdu from JMI?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as Urdu journalists, translators, content writers, teachers, civil service officers (Urdu is a language option in UPSC), radio/TV presenters in Urdu channels, and researchers. JMI also offers a PG Diploma in Urdu Mass Media and MA Urdu for further specialisation. Many graduates work with Urdu newspapers like Inquilab, Rashtriya Sahara, and Urdu TV channels.
Ques. Is the BA (Hons.) Urdu programme at JMI taught entirely in Urdu?
Ans. Yes, the programme is primarily in Urdu medium. Core subjects including Urdu literature, poetry, prose, and linguistics are taught in Urdu. Students are expected to have a working knowledge of Urdu script (Nastaliq) for reading and writing. Some general papers may have bilingual content.

Ans. BA (Hons.) Urdu is a 4-year undergraduate programme focused on Urdu language, literature, and linguistics. The PG Diploma in Urdu Mass Media is a 1-year postgraduate diploma focused on Urdu journalism and media. The PG Diploma is typically pursued after completing a bachelor's degree and is ideal for those specifically interested in Urdu media careers.
Ques. Does JMI have a special provision for students who studied in Urdu medium schools?
Ans. Yes, JMI has a special Urdu Medium provision. Candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from Urdu medium schools recognised by JMI are eligible for admission with relaxed criteria. Ques. What is the Muslim minority reservation in BA (Hons.) Urdu at JMI?
Ans. JMI being a Minority Institution, 50% of seats are reserved for Muslim candidates: 30% for Muslim applicants (general), 10% for Muslim women, and 10% for Muslim OBC/ST candidates. The remaining 50% seats are open to all candidates. Additionally, 5% seats are reserved for PwD candidates, 5% for internal Jamia students, and 5% for Kashmiri migrants.
