Ques. Is the M.Plan programme at JMI a full-time on-campus programme?
Ans. Yes, the Master of Planning at JMI is a full-time, on-campus programme offered by the Department of Planning, Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics. Classes are held on weekdays and the programme involves studio work, fieldwork, and project submissions that require regular physical attendance.
Ques. What is the difference between M.Plan at JMI and M.Arch at JMI? Can I apply for both?
Ans. M.Plan focuses on Urban and Regional Planning (land use, transportation, housing, environment), while M.Arch focuses on architectural design and building sciences. Both are separate programmes with different entrance tests. You can apply for both separately, but you will need to appear in the respective entrance tests (M84 for M.Plan, M60 for M.Arch).
Ques. I have a Master's degree in Geography. Am I eligible for M.Plan at JMI?
Ans. Yes. Candidates with a Master's degree in Economics, Sociology, or Geography with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks are eligible to apply for M.Plan at JMI. This makes the programme accessible to social science graduates as well.
Ques. How competitive is the M.Plan entrance test at JMI? What was the cutoff last year?
Ans. The programme has only 20 seats, making it quite competitive. For the 2025-26 session, the General category cutoff was 51.50 marks, Muslim category was 40.00, Muslim OBC/ST was 31.50, Muslim Women was 37.50, and PWD was 31.00 (out of 100 marks in the entrance test).
Ques. Are there placement opportunities after M.Plan from JMI?
Ans. M.Plan graduates from JMI find employment in government planning bodies (DDA, NMMC, Smart Cities Mission), urban development authorities, consulting firms, NGOs, and research organisations. JMI's location in New Delhi provides excellent networking opportunities with central government agencies. Many graduates also pursue PhD or appear for UPSC/state civil services.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Plan students at JMI?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at JMI is not guaranteed and is allotted on a merit-cum-need basis, considering factors like distance from home, economic background, and academic performance. With a combined capacity of about 4,120 students (boys and girls combined), approximately 30% of JMI students get hostel accommodation. It is advisable to apply for hostel at the time of admission and also arrange for private accommodation as a backup.
