SRIHER M.Sc Biotechnology FAQs
Ques. Does SRIHER conduct a written entrance exam for M.Sc. Biotechnology, or is it purely interview-based?
Ans. SRIHER does not conduct a written entrance exam for M.Sc. Biotechnology. Admission is entirely through a personal interview conducted at the Chennai campus. Candidates are shortlisted based on their application and called for the interview, which is the sole basis of selection. In case of a tie in interview marks, academic performance in the qualifying degree is used as a tiebreaker.
Ques. Can students from non-life science backgrounds (e.g., B.Tech. Biotechnology or B.Pharm) apply for M.Sc. Biotechnology at SRIHER?
Ans. Yes. SRIHER accepts applications from a wide range of qualifying degrees including B.Tech. (Biotechnology), B.Tech. (Genetic Engineering), Bachelor of Pharmacy, MBBS, BDS, BPT, and B.Sc. in various Allied Health Sciences streams, in addition to traditional life science graduates. The minimum requirement is 55% marks (or B+ grade) in the qualifying degree.
Ques. What is the research exposure like for M.Sc. Biotechnology students at SRIHER?
Ans. SRIHER has a strong research culture with over 11,000 cumulative publications and an H-index of 100. M.Sc. Biotechnology students undertake a full-semester Dissertation and Viva Voce in Semester IV, working in well-equipped laboratories within the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Technology. The university's proximity to a 2,500-bed hospital also provides unique opportunities for medically-oriented biotechnology research, particularly in areas like cancer biology, human genetics, and regenerative medicine.
Ques. What are the career options after M.Sc. Biotechnology from SRIHER?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry (R&D, quality control, regulatory affairs), academic research, diagnostic services, and clinical research organisations. Many students also go on to pursue PhD programmes at reputed institutions in India and abroad. Entry-level salaries for M.Sc. Biotechnology graduates in India typically range from Rs. 3-5 LPA, with experienced professionals earning significantly more. SRIHER's strong research network and hospital linkages also open doors to clinical research and medical biotechnology roles.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc. Biotechnology students at SRIHER?
Ans. SRIHER has a large on-campus hostel facility with 3,878 rooms accommodating over 5,935 students (separate hostels for boys and girls). While hostel accommodation is generally available, it is not guaranteed and is subject to availability at the time of admission. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early after receiving their admission offer. Hostel fees range from Rs. 1,60,000 to Rs. 2,20,000 per year (including mess charges), depending on the room type chosen.
Ques. How competitive is the M.Sc. Biotechnology programme at SRIHER, and what is the seat intake?
Ans. The M.Sc. Biotechnology programme at SRIHER has a seat intake of 25 students per batch, making it a relatively small and competitive cohort. Since admission is interview-based (no written exam), candidates with strong academic records in their qualifying degree and a clear understanding of biotechnology concepts tend to perform well. The small batch size ensures personalised attention from faculty and better access to laboratory resources, which is a significant advantage for research-oriented students.
