TANUVAS MVSc (LPM) FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) and M.V.Sc. (Animal Nutrition) or (Animal Genetics and Breeding)?

Ans. M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) is a broader, applied specialisation that covers the overall management of livestock farms, including nutrition, breeding, housing, health, and economics. In contrast, Animal Nutrition and Animal Genetics and Breeding are more focused, research-oriented specialisations. LPM graduates are particularly suited for farm management, extension services, and government animal husbandry roles.

Ques. What government job opportunities are available after M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) from TANUVAS?

Ans. Graduates are eligible for positions such as Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Livestock Development Officer, and Animal Husbandry Officer in Tamil Nadu and other state governments. They can also apply for ICAR scientist positions, teaching posts in veterinary colleges, and roles in the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and similar organisations.

Ques. Is the M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) programme available at all TANUVAS constituent colleges?

Ans. The programme is primarily offered at the Post Graduate Research Institute in Animal Sciences (PGRIAS), Kattupakkam, Chennai, which is a constituent unit of TANUVAS. Candidates should verify the specific college offering this specialisation at the time of counselling, as seat allocation may vary.

Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. after M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) from TANUVAS?

Ans. Yes, graduates of M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) are eligible to apply for Ph.D. programmes in Livestock Production and Management or related disciplines at TANUVAS and other ICAR-accredited veterinary universities. TANUVAS also offers Ph.D. (Veterinary Sciences) programmes for which M.V.Sc. graduates can apply.

Ques. What is the scope of M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) in the private sector?

Ans. The private sector offers significant opportunities for LPM graduates in integrated livestock farming companies, dairy cooperatives (such as Aavin, Amul), poultry companies (such as Suguna, Venkatesh Hatcheries), animal feed companies, and agribusiness consultancies. The growing demand for animal protein and dairy products in India makes this specialisation increasingly relevant.

Ques. How is the selection done for the Tamil Nadu state quota seats in M.V.Sc. (Livestock Production and Management) at TANUVAS?

Ans. For the Tamil Nadu state quota, selection is based on the OGPA (Overall Grade Point Average) obtained in the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree. Candidates with higher OGPA are ranked higher in the merit list. There is no separate entrance exam for the state quota; however, candidates employed in state/central government or public sector organisations must apply through proper channel. Communal reservation norms of the Government of Tamil Nadu are also applicable.
