The B.Sc (Hons.) Zoology programme at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, is a 3-year full-time undergraduate course offered by the Department of Zoology, Institute of Science, which is part of the DBT-supported Interdisciplinary School of Life Sciences (DBT-ISLS). The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of the animal kingdom, covering cell biology, genetics, ecology, animal physiology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology, and wildlife conservation, with strong practical and field training components. The total tuition fees for the course is Rs. 12,000 for the entire 3-year duration (Rs. 2,000 per semester), making it one of the most affordable zoology programmes at a premier central university. Admission is based on CUET (UG) scores, and the department offers 72 seats. The course is offered in full-time, on-campus mode and is highly popular among students aspiring for careers in research, wildlife conservation, government services, and postgraduate studies at IITs and other premier institutions.

Admissions for the 2026-27 session are upcoming. CUET UG 2026 registration closed in February 2026, and the exam is scheduled from May 11 to May 31, 2026. BHU's CAP (Combined Allotment Programme) portal for UG admissions is expected to open in July 2026, with seat allotment rounds likely in August 2026. The CUET 2025 Round 1 cutoff for General category was 612 marks (Biology group), reflecting extremely high competition for this programme.

BHU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 2 Reviews

The Institute of Science at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) boasts a highly qualified faculty that excels in their respective fields, fostering strong student-teacher interactions and offering internship opportunities. Noteworthy professors in the Zoology department include Dr. Amaresh Singh, Dr. Sameer, and Dr. JK Roy. In Zoology, placements typically occur after students pursue an MSc, as there are no placements at the undergraduate level. However, the Geology Department achieves a higher placement rate compared to other departments.

While internship opportunities are limited, professors sometimes provide unpaid internships, and the institute organizes workshops for skill enhancement. Occasionally, internship programs with stipends ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 INR are offered, generally in nearby areas like Sarnath and Varanasi. The university provides affordable education, with entry fees around 3,000 INR. Semester fees vary but remain low, with odd semesters costing approximately 4,750 INR (including tuition and hostel) and even semesters around 3,125 INR.

Mess charges are not part of these fees. State scholarships are available, ensuring accessibility for all students. The campus is well-regarded for its educational environment.

BHU B.Sc Zoology FAQs

Ques. The CUET 2025 cutoff for B.Sc Zoology at BHU was 612 - is this out of 800?

Ans. Yes, CUET scores are calculated out of 800 (200 per subject x 4 subjects, or based on the number of subjects attempted). A score of 612 in the Biology group means candidates need to score very high in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This reflects the extremely high demand for this programme at BHU.

Ques. Does BHU provide campus placements for B.Sc (Hons.) Zoology students?

Ans. No, BHU does not provide campus placements for B.Sc (Hons.) Zoology students. The programme is primarily research and academics-oriented. Most graduates pursue M.Sc Zoology/Life Sciences (at BHU, IITs via IIT JAM, or other universities), appear for CSIR NET/JRF, or prepare for government competitive exams (Forest Service, UPSC, SSC).

Ques. Can I appear for IIT JAM after B.Sc Zoology from BHU?

Ans. Yes, B.Sc (Hons.) Zoology graduates from BHU are eligible to appear for IIT JAM in Biological Sciences (BL) or Biotechnology (BT). BHU's rigorous curriculum in life sciences provides a strong foundation for IIT JAM preparation.

Ques. What career options are available after B.Sc Zoology from BHU?

Ans. Career options include: M.Sc Zoology/Life Sciences at IITs, NITs, or BHU; CSIR NET/JRF for research fellowships and lectureship; Indian Forest Service (IFS) and other government exams; wildlife conservation and NGO sector; pharmaceutical and biotech industries; teaching; and research positions in ICAR, ICMR, and other government research bodies.

Ques. Is Biology mandatory in Class 12 for B.Sc Zoology at BHU?

Ans. Biology is the preferred subject, but technically the eligibility requires Physics, Chemistry, and any one of Biology/Geology/Earth Sciences/Geography. However, for CUET, you should appear in Biology as it is the most relevant subject for Zoology, and the cutoff is calculated based on the Biology group score.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Sc Zoology and B.Sc Botany at BHU? Which is better?

Ans. Both are offered by the Institute of Science at BHU with similar fee structures and academic rigor. Zoology focuses on the animal kingdom, while Botany focuses on plant sciences. Both lead to similar career paths (M.Sc, CSIR NET, government exams). The choice depends on your interest. Notably, the CUET cutoff for Zoology (612) is significantly higher than for Botany, indicating higher demand for Zoology at BHU.

Fees and Financial Aid:

The fees varies year after year. 1st year it between 3000-4000, 2nd year it between 2000-3000 and final year it's between 1500-2000. The fees hike from the previous batch is very minimal and economical as its a central government funded University. Rarely a scholarship because the fees is minimum itself. Hostel charges and mess charges are separate. One can wish to stay outside campus in PGs if they are not allowed a hostel.
