BHU M.Sc Applied Microbiology FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc Applied Microbiology and M.Sc Microbiology? Is Applied Microbiology a better choice?
Ans. M.Sc Applied Microbiology focuses on the practical and industrial applications of microbiology, including fermentation technology, food microbiology, pharmaceutical microbiology, and environmental applications. M.Sc Microbiology (offered at many other universities) tends to be more theoretical. The "Applied" focus at BHU makes graduates more industry-ready, particularly for roles in pharmaceutical companies, food processing industries, and environmental agencies. For research-oriented careers, both are equally valid.
Ques. Is the special course fee of Rs. 40,000 per year applicable to all students including SC/ST?
Ans. Yes. The special course fee is charged uniformly to all students regardless of category. This is a key distinction from regular BHU courses where reserved category students benefit from fee relaxations. Students from SC/ST/OBC categories may receive maintenance allowances and reimbursement for the regular fee component through government scholarship schemes (NSP, UP Scholarship), but the special course fee is generally not covered under these schemes.
Ques. What are the career options after M.Sc Applied Microbiology from BHU?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in pharmaceutical and biotech companies (quality control, R&D), food and beverage industries, hospitals and diagnostic laboratories, environmental agencies and pollution control boards, research institutions (CSIR, ICMR, DBT labs), and academia. Many students also qualify for CSIR-NET/JRF (Life Sciences), GATE (Biotechnology), and DBT-JRF, which open doors to Ph.D. fellowships and research positions.
Ques. How competitive is the CUET-PG cutoff for M.Sc Applied Microbiology at BHU?
Ans. The programme is moderately competitive. In 2025, the CUET-PG cutoff for the General category was 185-205 marks (out of 300), with the OBC cutoff at 156-174 and SC cutoff at 126-165. In 2024, the General category cutoff was higher at 227-236. Students are advised to prepare thoroughly for the CUET-PG Microbiology/Applied Microbiology paper (SCQP03).
Ques. Does BHU provide placement assistance for M.Sc Applied Microbiology students?
Ans. BHU has a central placement cell, but dedicated placement support for M.Sc Applied Microbiology is limited. Most students secure positions through self-driven job applications, internships, and competitive examinations. The programme's strength lies in preparing students for research careers and competitive exams rather than direct campus placements. Students interested in industry roles are advised to actively pursue internships during the programme.
Ques. What laboratory facilities are available for M.Sc Applied Microbiology students at BHU?
Ans. The Department of Botany at BHU has well-equipped laboratories for microbial culture, fermentation, molecular biology, and environmental microbiology. Additionally, students have access to BHU's central SATHI (Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institute) facility, which houses advanced instruments including electron microscopes, mass spectrometers, NMR, and flow cytometers. This access to state-of-the-art equipment significantly enhances the research and practical training experience.
