BHU M.Sc Environmental Science FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc Environmental Science at BHU and M.Sc Environmental Sciences at IESD BHU?

Ans. BHU offers two distinct environmental science programmes. The M.Sc Environmental Science (course_id 4363) is offered under the Department of Botany, Institute of Science, as a special course. The Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development (IESD) offers M.Sc Environmental Sciences with specializations in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Ecological Sciences, and Environmental Biotechnology (PG0713). Both are 2-year full-time programmes, but they differ in department, fee structure, and specialization focus. Candidates should check the BHU PG Bulletin 2026 carefully to apply for the correct programme.

Ques. Is the special course fee of Rs. 40,000 per year applicable to SC/ST/OBC students as well?

Ans. Yes. The special course fee is applicable to all students regardless of category. Unlike regular courses where reserved category students may get fee relaxations, the special course fee at BHU is charged uniformly. Students from SC/ST/OBC categories may receive maintenance allowances and reimbursement for the regular fee component through government scholarship schemes, but the special course fee is generally not covered.

Ques. What kind of internship opportunities are available during the M.Sc Environmental Science programme?

Ans. The programme includes a mandatory 1-month industrial internship in Semester 2 and a 6-month dissertation or internship in Semester 4. Students have undertaken internships at prestigious organizations including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, and various state and central government environmental agencies. The department facilitates these placements, though students are also encouraged to independently seek internship opportunities.

Ques. What are the career prospects after M.Sc Environmental Science from BHU?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in environmental consulting firms, pollution control boards (state and central), forest departments, environmental impact assessment agencies, NGOs working on sustainability and conservation, research institutions, and academia. Many students also qualify for CSIR-NET (Environmental Sciences), UGC-NET, and GATE (Environmental Science and Engineering) after completing the programme. Government jobs through UPSC (Indian Forest Service) and state PSC examinations are also popular career paths.

Ques. How is the placement scenario for M.Sc Environmental Science at BHU?

Ans. Placements for M.Sc Environmental Science are moderate. Approximately 25-30% of students secure campus placements, with salary packages ranging from Rs. 2.4 LPA to Rs. 3 LPA for industry roles. Many graduates opt for higher studies (Ph.D., M.Tech in Environmental Engineering) or government competitive examinations rather than direct industry placements. The programme's strength lies more in research and academic preparation than in corporate placements.

Ques. Can engineering graduates apply for M.Sc Environmental Science at BHU?

Ans. The minimum eligibility requires a B.Sc./B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in science. Engineering graduates (B.Tech/B.E.) are generally not eligible for this programme as it requires a science graduation background. However, candidates with B.Tech in Environmental Engineering or related fields may be considered - candidates are advised to verify eligibility from the official BHU PG Bulletin 2026 before applying.
