What Students Say
Likes
- I like the fact that people from different ethnicities and nationalities are welcome at this university. There is a friendly environment. The range of choices in classes and courses is also great. Faculty members are highly supportive and are always there to help you out. Funding and financial support is amazing. It is one of the largest funded public universities.
Dislikes
- I feel like UT Austin is still on the road to reach at the level of an IVY league. This is both in respect to its faculty and students. For eg- there is a dire need for more scholars working on south Asian society and history.
It has been good so far. I want better academic training but i am happy to get support from faculty and department. Name of the University, My Faculty Advisor, Department Funding.
Course Curriculum
Course curriculum is well designed and well defined. Academics are rigorous and demanding of very high standards. Support will be given at every step.
Faculty
1 faculty: 3 Students (differs HIGHLY from Department to department and degree)
Campus Life
Campus Life is vibrant and lively. infrastructure needs improvement. Extracurricular activities are plenty with many opportunities to join various clubs. Its especially recommended during Bachelors and Masters.
Placement
Its not relevant to my field of study. In general merit is given more priority over other factors.
Accommodation
Accommodation is a bit of a challenge. Rates of apartment are rising high especially for places around the campus. I was fortunate to get the University apartment which is slightly better in terms of cost and space. 700 dollars per month is the rent plus 50 dollars utilities. Groceries will be extra.
Exams
This is specifically for PhD in Humanities:- 1.) Statement of Purpose (2.) Writing Sample (20-25 pages) (3) 3 LORs (4) GRE and TOEFL (requirements vary as per the degree and course but mostly these are formalities) (5) CVs. Yes i had to submit SOP, LOR, CV. There was a brief but rigorous interview about my topic of research. Statement of Purpose included my Academic history and proposed research project and concluded it by mentioning how my project is relevant to the faculty of my department. CV should be detailed:- language capacity is integral followed by publications and paper presentations. I have no idea about LOR because it was entirely a blind thing. Yes I had one round of interview which was to test my in depth knowledge and interest on the subject. It was somewhat related to my CV and SOP but mostly about my discipline.
Fees
My tuition fees is covered by my funding.
Scholarship
Fellowship from the University which is a combination of scholarship and TA/GRA -ship.
