Course Curriculum

10

  • The course curriculum is easy to understand for the students who come from different backgrounds. I myself am from a different background of study, but I grasped the topics much easier here at UNT. The curriculum covers both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject.
  • The course is straightforward and every course starts from the basics first. The timeline to complete the assignments is satisfactory and the projects that students get to work on are noteworthy.
  • For masters, only one class per week for the course is scheduled. The students need to take up to three subjects per semester.
  • Average number: 50
  • Upto 75% of the students are Indian

Admission Experience

  • I applied for the following universities:
    • 1. University of North Texas (admitted): Master of Science in Information Science
    • 2. University of Cincinnati (admitted): Master of Science in Information Technology
  • No rejections since I applied to only two universities. The fewer colleges you apply to, the higher the chances get of your visa acceptance. Being focused on only one university and studying the university's complete curriculum before applying is the key to getting admitted in a single attempt.
  • The University of North Texas felt safe to attend rather than going to Cincinnati. I emailed a few of the professors whose subjects I would be interested in taking, and the responses received from them were remarkable.
  • The admission process included submitting university transcripts, identity proofs, IELTS scores, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose. The minimum score required in IELTS was 7.0 with a minimum of 8.0 CGPA in the academics.
  • The overall admission experience was smooth and no challenge was experienced from any end. The only thing is, you need to apply to the universities as soon as possible, as the decisions take time to be announced from the university end.
  • I applied to the fall 2023 intake. The time was correct for me since I graduated from my Bachelor of Engineering the same year and the support I received from my parents to achieve my study abroad dream was immense. The admission process took around 3-4 months.
  • The application process started in the month of October for me.
  • October 2022: Applied for a passport and started the process of IELTS preparation. Also simultaneously started gathering all the required documents for the application.
  • November 2022: Gave my IELTS and received a band of 8.0. Applied to the university using all the documents in hand. Received an application completion email within 48 hours of submitting my application.
  • December 2022: The wait period. Universities go on a winter break. Hence they roll out admission decisions by January first week.
  • January 2023: Received the acceptance email from the provost at UNT.

Faculty

8

  • The faculty to student ratio is 1:35. The ratio does not influence the faculty student interaction because the faculty accommodates his scheduled hours for weekly meetings and clears student queries one by one.
  • The teaching methodology is good. Faculty makes an effort to make the learning process easy and add more practical assignments rather than theory.
  • Dr. Drayden is one of the best faculty members I have met so far.

Campus Life

10

  • The University of North Texas (UNT) has multiple campuses, including the main campus in Denton, UNT at Frisco, UNT Health Science Centre in Fort Worth, and UNT New College at Frisco. Facilities across these campuses include libraries such as the Willis Library in Denton, with extensive collections and study spaces, and digital resources at UNT Frisco.
  • Sports facilities include the Pohl Recreation Centre in Denton, with a gym, swimming pools, climbing walls, and outdoor fields for various sports. Medical services, counselling, and wellness programs are available, along with dining options and residence halls.
  • UNT hosts major festivals like University Day, the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, and Mean Green sporting events, with over 450 student organisations supporting interests in arts, culture, academics, and recreation. Extracurricular activities include sports, cultural events, concerts, and community service initiatives, fostering a vibrant campus life.

Part Time Jobs

  • You get a TA/RA role easily in every department, as professors need TAs. as there are not many students in each class. One TA is shared among 2/3 professors. But if you want TAship, you get it only after 2 semesters and your grade should be A in all subjects. Pay is 20$ per hour for RA/TA.
  • 20 hours of work allowed. Other campus jobs are not very difficult to get but you need to be patient and keep applying on handshake. Students can work up to 20 hours per week, making a healthy balance between academics and employment.
  • Most Indian students prefer to do a lab assistant or TA job and they earn around $15-20 per hour. It is very easy to secure a part-time job; you just have to navigate to the department notice board or university website. The usual process for applying for part-time jobs is very easy; you just have to reach out to the concerned person or just fill out a form on the website. Although some positions may require resumes or attending interviews, most are very easy to go procedures.

Placement

8

  • I would say 40% got a job directly after graduation; the rest are still looking for opportunities. It depends on the amount of application you are applying online. The average salary is approximately 50-60k$. The students usually apply through LinkedIn and other job portals and
  • Some apply through networking. Networking with professors and attending career fairs also play a role in securing employment.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • The accommodation is easy to find in Denton. There are many options available in and across campus. I chose off-campus accommodation. I used various accommodation websites to find my accommodation. It was not at all challenging for me.
  • For future students, I would recommend starting to search for accommodation as a priority, as the accommodation fills up fast in Denton. My accommodation is close to college and there are free bus services all across Denton City.

Exams

  • IELTS, GRE (optional for my course)
  • Statement of Purpose, Identity Proof, Transcript, Degree Certificate, Three Letters of Recommendations, IELTS Score Card, and Resume.
  • Interviews are only required for PhD students at our university. Master students are not required to complete an interview process for admission. The decision is directly announced after taking the documents into account.

Fees

  • Tuition fees: 9000-10000$
  • Living Expense: 3600$
  • Miscellaneous: 800$
  • Total (per semester): 14,400$
  • Monthly expense estimate: 500-600$ (rent: 300-350$, transportation: free, groceries: 100-150$, leisure expense: 100-150$).
  • Note: The expenses can vary based on the amount of spending every month. Students are advised to save money at least for a year before spending on any leisure activities or taking any personal tours.

Scholarship

  • The scholarships can be accessed through the Eagle Scholarship Portal of the University of North Texas. Most of the scholarships are applied after one year of study at the university. The university provides scholarships of up to $1,000 (500$ for fall, 500$ for spring). Students can also apply for an in-state tuition fee waiver after getting a scholarship.
  • I received a Texas Public Education Grant of $500 for the fall 2024 semester.
  • On average, 5-10% of the students receive scholarships every year.
