Course Curriculum

8

  • The difficulty level of the course curriculum is dependent on the faculty. It is a mix of both theory and practical and often there is a final project that can be published in conferences. Very interactive and research-oriented approach in general. Also, collaboration is a big theme.
  • The average number of students in my class were around 7-10 (not everyone takes all classes)
  • Indian students are enrolled in my course around 3-5 (PhD Aerospace)

Admission Experience

  • Applied to only one in US, which was University of Cincinnati (Admitted, unconditional)
Other than this, I applied mainly to schools in UK (Surrey and Leicester). - accepted in both of them.

I did receive a rejection from NUS (singapore) but that is probably because of low GPA as it is highly desirable to have a high GPA for NUS.

In USA, overall profile is given more importance.

  • Few reasons:
    1) US has 2-year masters degree (UK has one). Only 2-year masters are accepted in India for public institutions.
    2) US had better exposure in terms of industry.
    3) More funding opportunities for MS and PhD students.
    4) Neil Armstrong was the head of department in which I am a PhD Student. This was a driving factor in my decision.
    5) Experience is smooth, the department is awesome.
    6) GRE + TOEFL/IELTS is required for UC. (My GRE score for 321)

  • I applied to fall intake since spring intakes are off-cycle and it can be difficult to plan courses.

  • Admission process took around 3 months. I had applied in November/December time-frame and got admitted by February/early March if I remember correctly.

  • During this process, they may email to confirm IELTS/GRE scores and transcripts. Also, letters of recommendation must be sent timely.

Faculty

10

  • Kelly Cohen, Donghoon Kim are good profs in the department. As a grad student, I generally have 8-9 hours of lectures per week.
  • I think the course content is revised regularly to be ahead of the industry landscape, usually benefiting us and making us prepared for jobs.
  • The ratio influence the quality of education and interaction with faculty and In my course, it is very low but it is higher in other departments.

Campus Life

10

  • There are many campuses. The list and locations are available on the internet and UC website.
  • All facilities are available. Library, Hospital, Soccer stadium, Football stadium, Tennis courts, indoor/outdoor basketball arenas.
  • More than 100 campus festivals happen, 867 student clubs.
  • Indian student association, alongside numerous other student orgs exist and are active on campus. There is an event every week.

Part Time Jobs

  • I do not have numbers. But a lot of students get them. This is speculation but I will assume at least 50% get assistantships. I cannot share the pay range with you. This information must be obtained from the university. Other on-campus jobs include parking services, restaurants, night ride, stadium staff, starbucks, chick fil'a and other fast food stores.

  • Again, I am not allowed to share the pay amount of jobs. It is difficult to get these jobs as there aren;'t many but the students applying for these are a lot. Usually, it is an online application process followed by an interview. Find someone you know who's doing it to get a recommendation. Usually recommendations help (from what I have heard, I haven't worked on-campus so I am not sure)

Placement

10

  • No idea on the percentage of your graduating batch secures employment within 6 months of completing their course I do not have access to these numbers.

  • The average salary range that most students in your program can expect to earn upon graduation well My friends have received offers between 75k - 150k depending on job location.

  • Students usually find jobs after graduation through  Online job portals, internships and networking are the main sources. Campus recruitment is not common in aerospace.

  • Most of my friends are in data science, or data analyst roles. People in my course often become faculty or researchers.

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I used online facebook groups to find off-campus housing.
  • The monthly rent is around $800, it is quite expensive and you need to start looking early to get good options near campus.
  • I live a 10 min walk from campus which is considered very close. Most Indian students stay nearby on Ludlow Ave. There is also the indian store nearby (<5 min walking distance)

Exams

  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
  • IELTS or TOEFL as English language test
  • Application Fee of around 75-100$ depending on department
  • 2-3 Letters of Recommendation
  • No interview required but can be taken in case of PhD students who plan to join a particular research group
  • CV and statement of purpose are required. Do not use 1-page resumes but CVs which include all information.

Fees

  • Fees is around $11k per semester but most students get a scholarship reducing it to $3k per semester. Monthly expenses can easily be between 1000-1500 primarily because a private room in a 2bhk costs around $800 in a decent location/building.
  • Food/drinks/groceries can be $200-300. Transportation is free around campus using university shuttle service. But anywhere else is $10 minimum via cab. Bus network isn't the best.

Scholarship

  • Yes, it is called GIA which is given to most international students. No need to apply separately. You are considered when you make college application.
  • Fees is around $11k per semester but most students get GIA scholarship reducing it to $3k per semester. There are other opportunities like TA, RA, GA which cover full tuition and provide a bi-weekly stipend. There are also on-campus jobs if you cannot get a funded position.
