Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • The prominent flagship campus has a flexible curriculum, excellent research opportunities, a low cost of living, & easily available part-time on-campus jobs. Security was definitely a checkpoint for me as well.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • I think it was overambitious & had a very small number of seats. To add, I applied for a Master of Science in Computer science which is definitely one of the hardest ones to get into. The university has high prominence and would need more qualifications & is competitive as well.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Letters of recommendation (maybe three), a strong statement of purpose and Resume should be added along with marksheets and other details. A CV would help too. Writing in detail as to why you want to pursue a particular program, course, or university would definitely help a lot for their understanding of your interests.

Admission Experience

  • Curriculum, extracurricular activities, research opportunities, and flexible choice of electives. Beautiful flagship campus, with Chicago not being too far, and so many activities as well, including peer coaching, office hours, and guidance from seniors, students & everyone around. It's fun to be in a calm college town!

Class Schedule

9

  • Mostly 5-6 classes per week if you take 9 credits per semester; the timings depend on your courses. The average strength would be 45 students, almost 50 percent Indians. Self study would be approximately 4 hours/week, which should be enough if a student works hard regularly. Assignments would also take 2-3 hrs/week.

Faculty

9

  • Faculty to student ratio would be around 1:30 and they are very approachable; all of them have office hours. All of them are pretty good but Kurt Seiffert and Hamid reza are the best ones among the ones I learned through. Mmm, I don't think that's the case but asking would always help, I feel. They do give teaching assistant & research assistant positions.

Campus Life

10

  • They are awesome with so many fun events & activities round the year. There are almost 12-20 campuses & the entire town is our campus, to be honest! There are faculties of all the domains. Homecoming, basketball matches & Thanksgiving are highlights. There is a pre-exam relaxing week as well, which has numerous fun activities. IUB fair has its own beauty!

Part Time Jobs

  • They have an HRS portal where all part-times on campus are posted; the average would be $13/hour, and usually you should get one if you start applying before the semesters begin. The campus is big with a lot of dorms, dining halls, libraries, center desks, few technical jobs, teaching assistants & research positions as well.
  • I would say almost 10-20% would get TA/RAs in the second year & it would be less for the first year since professors give TAs & Ras after we take a course under them. The pay would be around $25/hour, but I' not too sure.
  • The other on-campus jobs are plentiful, & you could get one if required. The average pay would be around $13/hour since the cost of living in Bloomington is pretty low. 20 hours is the limit & 40 during summers and if you don't have classes.

Placement

8

  • I would say right now the market is not too good so it could be 60% but hopefully it gets better, the average salary would be 100K per year, I would say. Students use linkedin, glassdoor, jobwright and several other platforms to find jobs and internships. The lowest could be around $60,000/year.

Accommodation

Off Campus
9

  • Apartments.com and college whatsapp groups were a good source, I would say. Also, Bloomington is a small college town so the search area becomes smaller and I would definitely recommend staying on the east side, which would be the best. There is good bus connectivity all over the campus & different apartments, which are free for students.
