What Students Say
Likes
- Excellent Research Environment
- Lots of opportunities to collaborate between departments for interdisciplinary research
- Close connection with Industry
Dislikes
- Stipends could have been better
- Due to proximity to Boston and northeastern region, winter months are frigid with temperatures dipping upto -25 degree centigrade
Course Curriculum
10
- While most of the core coursework changes a little over time, new relevant coursework is always added in each semester, so that students can learn the latest and be equipped for the job market
- As of now, I haven't participated in any industrial exposure; however, there are ample such opportunities through summer internships and co-ops. Research is part of the day-to-day activity for any PhD student
- It depends on how many courses a student has opted for. Typically, one class a day. It can be one class in three days or even multiple classes in a single day. Totally based on the student's course load. There is no pattern or structure for it
Admission Experience
- I was accepted by one professor in his lab, which made it easier for me to secure the PhD admission offer. Besides, the long-term research opportunities in the Greater Boston Area are excellent due to the presence of multiple top-ranked universities like Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Boston University, and a lot of large MNCs and start-ups as well.
- My overall experience with UMass Lowell has been pretty good. Besides my PhD and research work, I got ample opportunities to develop my interpersonal and soft skills by participating in various university-sponsored workshops, competitions, etc.

Campus Life
10
- The campus is well-equipped with modern facilities. The library is a bit smaller compared to other R1 universities, but it is sufficient. There are multiple student clubs. Sports and athletics facilities are among the best in this region.
Part Time Jobs
- PhD students are funded through TA/RA and are not allowed to avail any other part-time opportunities. For MS students, although on-campus part-time jobs are available, one must not solely rely upon them to cover tuition and living costs. Those opportunities are limited and competitive. Max 20 hrs a week is allowed.
Placement
10
- Almost all students get jobs after a graduate degree. Some get placed sooner if they opt for an internship or co-op. Salary cannot be fit into any bucket, as it depends on subject, role, and organization.
- While the typical postdoctoral salary is around $70,000 - $90,000 after a PhD, industries like AI can offer salaries of more than $120,000 to top graduates.
Accommodation
Off Campus
10
- Shared off campus accomodation can be anything between $800-$1500 depending upon the facilities offered at the housing unit. water, trash disposal, and heat are typically included in rent for shared apartments. Individual studio apartments would start at a minimum of $1500. Heat, water, and trash handling charges could be extra.
- There are plenty of real estate agents and online platforms to search for off-campus accommodation. The university also has a dedicated website for off-campus accommodation.
