What Students Say
Likes
- Campus - Its very big and beautiful
- Facilities - I like the facilities like library and other renting facilities
- Diversity - College is very diverse, people from different countries are there
Dislikes
- Part time pay is very less
- Less companies are there in city
- Companies in charlotte mostly dont sponsor as most of companies are finance
Course Curriculum
- The difficulty level mostly depends on the instructor; if he is strict, then the difficulty level is higher. Some courses are totally practical, some are mixed, and some are totally theoretical.
- Some courses are not up to industry standards. They might not be useful for getting a job. But a positive thing is that it really develops your coding skills.
- Majority tech degree is done by indians. 80% of people are indians
Admission Experience
-
I applied to the following universities:
- University of Houston - Rejected, UT Dallas - Admitted , University of Delaware - Admitted
- UT Dallas and UNC Charlotte
- Yes, Its University of Houston
- No idea, it was very competitive. I think the GRE score might be a little low. I got a 301 score in GRE, which they also checked my verbal and maths section seperately. I think they also compared students with high maths scores.
- Low fees, many companies are in the city.
- Application then accepted with a letter of acceptance. Filled out some forms and paid the fees for the semester. Requires a transcript as well.
- GRE is required; I don't know the minimum. Maybe they want students to get more than 300 GRE marks, and TOEFL scores of more than 80 marks are sufficient.
- It was hectic as I was doing my full-time job as well. SOP takes time.
- I applied for the Fall intake. I choose fall intake because this is the best period for starting the semester, as there are more courses, and I left my job the previous month. I wanted to make my experience look longer so that it would help me in the job hunt. Also, there will be more hiring this month.
- The admission process took like 1 month. Its very quick process for UNC Charlotte students. They just have to accept the letter of acceptance(which I got within 2 weeks of applying), then give some documents, and it's done. I think 1 month is enough
Class Schedule
- I have like 3 classes in a week, not exceeding 2 hrs for each of the courses. Timings are random, will start anytime between 8 am and 8:30 pm max
- 60 students per class
Faculty
- Totally depends on the instructor. Some classes only have 30 students, and some even have 15 students. But in the case of grading, prof takes the help of a TA, and sometimes also for teaching. I don't think this ratio affects.
- It totally depends on the professor. Some professors do hands-on practicals, which I prefer more, but some also do theoretical. Course content is not good for getting a job.
- Prof. Ali Sever, Prof. Shrinivas Akella. These are really good professors who have the best curriculum for the industry.
Campus Life
- We have two campuses. One is in downtown Charlotte. The other one is in Dubois in uptown Charlotte.
- We have a lot of facilities such as the Library, UREC ( it has games, gym, swimming pool, basketball, yoga room, table tennis, badminton, volleyball), we have separate health services, and we can visit the health center. Also, we have a career center to review our resumes.
- We have a tailgate event, where our university participates in soccer.
- We have a lot of events when the semester starts.
Part Time Jobs
- It's quite high as there are a lot of courses. I think it must be easier than other universities.
- Pay is like 4000$ per semester for a TA and 6000 for an RA for a semester.
- They can do dining jobs, Desk job which are in abundance. Pay is quite low, like 8.5$ a hour. And they don't increment that much
- Can work 20 hours a week
- It is very easy to get campus jobs as it's not that competitive.
- Nearly like 8-10$ per hour, and we don't get really 20 hrs. It barely covers rent sometimes. It depends on the student, but now jobs are competitive, and the job market is very bad. Every university students are struggling, so i dont think it depends on the university. Applying for jobs, they can just apply on the university portal, just upload a resume, and fill in some info.
Placement
- I don't have the data. But nearly 90% people did not get a job after graduation for tech courses. I don't know about the other courses.
- It's like 70$k per year. But it depends on the previous experience of the student. If he had some experience in India.
- They just have to apply on the careers site; there is no other way.
- It took them like 1 year to get a job; it's mostly SDE roles.
- Honeywell and Spectrum hire in mass.
Accommodation
- I connected with seniors who helped me find an apartment. There is an association for indian students as well. They operate on WhatsApp.
- It's nearly 500-600$ a month, and it includes all electricity + wifi.
- Did not face any major challenge. But sometimes there was an issue when someone wanted a roommate to be veg like him or from the same state.
- It's very near the college, maybe 1km. Most students stay here only in University Terrace North
Exams
- GRE and TOEFL are both required, but I think Duolingo and IELTS might also be considered.
- Documents such as Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendation, and Resume are all required. I am not sure, as I applied 2 years ago, I think a transcript from the old college was also required.
- There was no interview at my university. Just the normal application process like other colleges.
Fees
- It's nearly 15k $ per semester. Health insurance - 3k$. Didn't take any hostel. My monthly expense is 100$ + rent(rent is nearly 550$ per month per person for a private room, it's cheaper if the room is shared, nearly 300-400$ per person).
- Food and other bills are under 100$. I don't require transportation fees as the commute facility is provided free by the university (Buses)
Scholarship
- I didn't receive any scholarship. Internationals can't get any scholarships as the scholarships are only for undergrads, mostly. There are many scholarships which do like 50% to 100% waive of fees for the semester.
- Also, my friends didn't get any scholarship as they are also international students and they are not citizens of usa. I don't know the number of scholarships awarded, as it's not disclosed.
