My master's at Northeastern Uni experience

CO-OP: It's the whole reason you go here. They basically line up real jobs for you, so you graduate with a stacked resume and actual experience. It's a massive advantage.
PROFESSORS: A lot of the professors have actually worked in the industry. They cut the academic nonsense and teach you stuff that's actually useful for your career.
COURSEWORK: The classes are hands-on. You build things and work on projects you can actually put on your portfolio, not just memorize a textbook.

Dislikes

EXPENSIVE: The place costs a fortune, and living in Boston is no joke either. Co-op helps, but the price tag is still brutal.
ON-CAMPUS JOBS: Pretty much worthless. They're hard to get, don't pay well, and everything revolves around co-op anyway.
STRINGENT: The administration is a pain. There's a rule for everything and zero flexibility. Trying to get anything done feels like navigating a maze of red tape.

Placement

80% of the batch secures a job in 6 months, but the current market is really bad, so we really can't say for the current times. Average starting salary is 80,000 - 100,000. Mostly everyone applied through job sites like LinkedIn. It's been really interesting to see where everyone from my batch has landed. The most common path for my batchmates was definitely into the tech industry.
We have a significant number of people who ended up at Amazon. You'll find recent grads working as Technology Consultants at places like Deloitte, PwC, and Accenture.

I found it through whatsapp and Facebook groups; Monthly rent was 600 USD. this was for a shared room in a three-bedroom apartment, which is how I managed to get the cost so low in an expensive area like Fenway/Kenmore. The Boston housing market is incredibly fast-paced, especially from July to September. Good, affordable places would get dozens of enquiries within hours of being posted. I had to be constantly checking the groups and messaging people immediately. Sharing a room is the most effective way to save money. Finally, try to connect with seniors from your programme; they often have rooms opening up and can give you the most reliable leads.
The accommodation is a 15 minute walk from the university. A large number of Indian and other international students at Northeastern tend to live in neighbourhoods that offer a good balance of affordability and proximity to campus. The most common areas are Mission Hill, Roxbury Crossing, and parts of Jamaica Plain (near the Orange Line T station).

Needless to say, the faculty is amazing. Almost all the faculty who taught me were passionate of their teaching and made sure we understood the concepts properly.
There are numerous events always happening around the campus which encourages diversity and inclusion.
Kudos to the off campus housing support which helps students feel safe while living off campus. They once came to the rescue while we were having issues with our landlord.

Dislikes

The fees per semester was growing rapidly almost every 6 months.
If only they considered reducing the fees to obtain OPT/Stem OPT, it'd have been great. But they keep increasing it each year.
Any item at the the bookstore inside the campus are quite expensive.

Placement

I don't know the exact numbers but from the people I know, around 10% secured a nice full-time job under 6 months after graduation. For a fresher working in a tech job, base salary ranges between $70k upto $100k/year and if they're having some experience, it can go up to $120k/year and beyond. I've seen regulatory affairs (RA) jobs starting at $50k/year and up to $120k/year. Most of the students apply through LinkedIn, JobRight, and Simplify portals.
There are particularly no "placement programmes" around the campus. The univ hosts career fairs where companies set up booths around the campus and students tend to go and talk to them. If they really like the candidate, they shall invite them for interviews later.
I've seen companies like Adobe, Bose, Plotly and many more big players attending these events.

I live off campus. Most of the international students live off campus.
On-campus housing is quite expensive, with shared apartments around $2000 to begin with. Compared to around $400 for shared living outside.
Finding a house is always a challenge. I recommend joining facebook housing groups and whatsapp housing groups. These groups are always active and are always looking for people to provide accommodation.
My monthly rent ranged from $550 (sharing) to $1200 (private).
I always used to live within a 2-mile radius of the univ.
Some students opt for online classes and tend to live far away from the univ., so they can pay less rent.
Indians are everywhere and it's not a big problem. Join the groups and you're good to go!

Full-time jobs and internships are very hard to get in the current job market. Getting interviews has become incredibly hard.
From my course, if anyone did get good jobs, they can expect a salary of over 100K mostly.
Most people apply to jobs on LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor and various other such platforms. They also get in touch with recruiters/hiring managers.

I was staying off-campus from the moment I landed in the US. There are no on-campus dorms for graduate students at Northeastern University.
I paid somewhere around $530-$560 at each of the places I stayed at. The heat and hot water were mostly included. You always had to pay for the electricity and WiFi.
I stayed around 15-20 minutes away from campus. I used to walk to campus. I stayed in the area where most Indian students stayed, the Longwood Medical Area.

There was a good enviornment many students with same career goals,, and things were pretty much streamlined, seniors were there to guide.

The major drawback is also the shear number of students,, to much competition, very difficult to find an on campus job itself .

Overall job market is very bad in US, and it does not matter which college you graduate from, But the location matters, Boston is a hub for healthcare, so that roles boom here.

Boston is just too expensive.

Mostly a lot of people do get employed, I believe.
The average salary range completely depends on your course and the experience level you have so it's not certain for any particular person from my point of view.
To find jobs, there are career fairs and online applications with a lot of networking through LinkedIn and other events. I am yet to graduate so I don't have any placement experience yet. Major companies are Amazon, Apple, and insurance companies.

I opted for off-campus accommodations.
I found it with the help of a relative and different websites like apt-finder and willow.
It was challenging to find an apartment because you cannot come and see what you're signing up for. You can always contact seniors and ask if they've got space in their house or if anyone has, they can tell you. WPI has an off-campus Facebook house hunt group as well.
I would like to recommend students definitely find a walking distance house from WPI as it gets harsh in winters. And find a house with a good heater.
My accommodations were a 7-10 minute walk from campus so it was pretty close. Most of the Indian students live in the same neighborhood.

Location : Boston is a great place to start a journey in a new country. It is vibrant. You get to experience all the four seasons.
Campus: The campus is big yet centralized. It is also modern which gives you a high class feel.
Opportunities - Varied range of on-campus job opportunities.

Dislikes

Weather : Boston can get real cold and that can lead to months of depressing cold days.
Competition : Even though there are a lot of on campus job opportunities, the students strength can make getting the job very competitive.
Expense: Northeastern, because it is a private university, is very expensive in terms of tuition fee, healthcare etc.

The University is very diverse, and good experience I got for my course program- Biotechnology.
The professors are experienced, knowledgeable and highly skilled.
I also got hands-on training and attend conferences, but they take a lots of money

Dislikes

The University is very expensive and fees per course credit increases every year.
They don't offer any scholarships for international students.
They never pay for Research Assistants. We volunteer in the biotech labs without any pay but we do it for our experience.

Placement

15% of students secure jobs within 6 months.
30 USD per hour is an average salary range that most students can expect to earn upon graduation.
students usually apply on LinkedIn or in the company portal to find jobs after graduation.
There is no concept of placements here. Students have to find jobs themselves.

I found my accommodation Through an app called Yocket, from there I got links for some whatsapp groups.
Monthly expenses include many things as listed below (per person) - Rent, electricity bill, water bill, WiFi bill, Laundry, groceries, Transportation. Everything in total would be around 1000 US dollars. So, this expense would be there for every month.
It was difficult to find vegetarians and the places were very bad with rats and cockroaches. Most people never used to reply.
Mission Main is a very good place to stay, it is safe at night. Police and ambulance will be going around this area. It is very nearby University and also near to train station, grocery stores, and bus stand.
I live in Mission main and it is 10 mins walk to the university. Most of the Indian students live in an apartment called Jvue.

My Dream University - Northeastern University Experience

The professors at Khoury College of Computer Sciences are amazing, the way the design the course structure is was makes it better than the other departments at NEU.
The campus is located in the prime spot of Boston city, thus making it very accessible and easy to commute.
There are many facilities and clubs in NEU which students can take part in for extracurricular involvement.

Dislikes

The campus is quite small (only 75-80 acres) and doesn’t have any iconic buildings, so there’s nothing we have we can flaunt about in our pictures.
Being in Boston, the winters are very cold, with temperatures going as low as -20°C and snowing all day. Definitely not ideal if you’re not used to extreme cold.
There are too many Indian students, which limits opportunities for learning about other communities and international networking.

Placement

Employment Rate Post-Graduation:

- The average salary for graduates from the Khoury College of Computer Sciences is $95,000. It can also go up to $120,000 if very skilled.
Job Search Methods:
Co-op Program: Northeastern's is very famous for its co-op programme, which allows students to gain hands-on experience in their field of study, often leading to full-time job offers upon graduation.
Networking: The university's extensive alumni network and industry connections provide students with opportunities to connect with potential employers.
On-campus career fair: Usually there is a Talent Connect Career Fair, which takes place each semester, in which around 100-120 companies come to seek and talk with us students about the possible opportunities and roles in the company.
Placement experiences and major employers:
At the moment, the US job market isn't the best; there are layoffs happening very regularly and not many roles are out in the market. But still, many of my friends have got internships.
I have many seniors who have gotten a job at these companies for various roles like Software Developer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Engineer, etc:-
- Amazon
- Google
- Deloitte
- Goldman Sachs
- Pfizer
Major companies hiring from MS in Artificial Intelligence are Fidelity Investments, Jane Street, Whoop, FTI consulting, etc.

I found my accommodation via a broker named StudentLandings Inc.
Monthly expenses include rent and utilities (electricity, gas, and wifi bill). Rent costs around 530 dollars, and utilities cost around 70-80 dollars max per month. Facilities only include all the in-unit appliances like microwave, dishwasher, oven, Washer and dryer.
We didn't face any challenges while finding accommodations; as such, everything went smoothly.
Do look out for accommodation mainly in the Mission Hill area, as the utility bill there is free of charge and its very close to the university. Also, the neighbourhood is very safe and lively.
I don't have any transportation costs as there's a free bus ride on the route where my house is located. And on top of that, my house is just 1.3 km away from the university, which is pretty convenient.
Most Indian students stay in areas like Roxbury, Mission Hill, Fenway, and South End. These are places that are near the university.

There are too many Indian students, so we get very less chances to speak with people from other ethnicities
Boston City life is very expensive
House searching is a tedious process

Placement

After completing the degree, it is pretty easy to secure a job.
Almost 90% of the people after graduation will be placed.
Most people in my program (Data Analytics Engineering), will earn an average salary of $70,000 per year.
After graduation, few people who had done their internships earlier, would convert it into full time. Others will apply through different job portals like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Monster, and they will get interviews based on their previous work experience, domain knowledge, and skills.
Major companies like JPMorgan, BCG, Fidelity Investments, Apple, Microsoft, Salesforce, had hired students from my program.

The Graduate Students doesn't have On-Campus accommodation option. But, Northeastern offers off-campus house searching facilities.
I found my first accommodation through Northeastern Housing groups, where each day the messages are piled up with accommodations for students.
The monthly rent varies depending on the place. If you find a place near University, it will cost more than $1000 for private room and $700 for shared room.
I stayed in a shared room where I paid $625 including utilities (Water, Gas, sewage) and there will be additional utility charges (electricity and Wi-Fi).
I would say check in the Northeastern Housing groups for accommodation, which is the easier way, and also, check in Facebook pages for accommodations.
My accommodation is 0.8 miles away from University, and it is a place called Roxbury, where most of the Indian students stay, because of less monthly rent, easier bus service access.
