- I like the most about my college is it's location and classroom teachings.
Dislikes
- I don't like about the college is placement support for international students.
Campus Life
- There are more than 10 campus clubs and multiple tailgates and activities that you can take part in every week.
Accommodation
- Rent per month - 600 to 1000 USD
Likes
- Course selection, supportive teaching staff and international services.
Dislikes
- Lack of international hiring companies in career fair
Campus Life
- A lot of events and campus clubs available, very diverse and inclusive. The research is one of the top in the country but with limited availability.
- There are more than 3 libraries and they are huge in size, some open for 24 hours. The gym is among top school gyms of the US, with a lot of sports facilities.
Accommodation
- Apartments.com, Zillow and student whatsapp groups help in finding accommodation. 650-750$ per month- including heat, water, waste disposal. Some even have maid service per week/month, sauna and gym.

- No late night bus services during winter
Campus Life
- Campus: 3 great libraries, Memorial Library and College Library, are the best I found. Also, for Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy, the AMP library is good.
- Sports : Lots of facilities and opportunities for casual, professional participation
- Medical : Wisconsin Medical college
- Campus : University of Wisconsin-Madison Fests,
- Clubs: Astronomy club, Indian Association, Diwali, Holi nights
- Extracurricular: Stargazing, Mathematics festival, Putnam competition brainstorming
- Most of the students applied for PhD programs, and 100% of them got admits in 1 or more.
- I applied for industry and there were 10-20% of students who went to big tech companies or hedge funds, HFTs.
- Average Salary for industry: 150k+ USD
- Job: Alumni network, referrals, asking their mentor for connections, conferences, and organized alumni talks Highest: 500k+, lowest: 80k-100k

- - Top 15 in US for Computer Science
- - Good and experienced faculty for professors
- - College Town so student friendly
Dislikes
- - Very cold weather in winters
- - Not very great food options
- - Not near companies hub
Campus Life
- UW Madison is the main one; there is UW Milwaukee, UW Eau Claire, etc.
- There are various top-class libraries and lecture halls, gyms, tennis halls, football grounds and stadiums and swimming pools indoors.
- There are concerts like Coldplay happening next year, events like Diwali from the Indian Student Association, and football (rugby) games between state colleges.
- There are lots of extracurriculars one can get involved in as a student; get coaching as well.
Accommodation
- For the first year, I got the on-campus dorms; mine was the Ogg residence hall (pictures attached below). It had good rooms, kitchens, study lounges, and laundry facilities.
- It was right in front of the bus stop, gym, and dining hall.
- Other dorms were also nearby and some a little far.
- For years 2, 3, and 4, I am living in different apartments, which I found online and went through the application process for.
- The housing market is expensive here and rents are soaring. People are opting for luxury residences.
- Off-campus accommodations are within walking distance of classes.
- For future students, I would say find a few people and live in shared rooms to save money and start research early.

Likes
- The flexibility of choosing classes. Of course some requirements were imposed, such as certain number of humanities and social science courses for a computer science degree, but apart from these there was a lot of leeway.
- The nightlife. Ease of access to booze, clubs and having a good with friends and others.
- The weather. Less pollution, less heat, less people, less crowding. Also snow in winters.
Dislikes
- The food. Even the best of the best restaurants cannot compare with mammi ka khana.
- The extra requirements. You would be forced to take a certain number of humanities, social sciences, ethnic studies courses no matter what you choose to study.
- The fact that the degree is 4 years and 3 years. Extra year of not earning, spending in college (could be a plus, but was a negative for me).
Campus Life
-
I could not tell you how many campuses were there, since private buildings were converted into university buildings all the time. The most astonishing thing to me was these buildings were not barricaded or secured in any way, essentially one could walk into a building at any moment.
-
There were 2 gyms that included everything, even basketball, badminton courts and even swimming pools. Medical services are very good, I can attest first hand since I suffered an allergy attack from shrimp. Medical services and police are coordinated with the city police. There are several libraries, student organizations, too many to name here. Clubs exist for everything even cricket which was started by friends and I.
Accommodation
- In 2019, I did not know about online portals, so university accommodation were my only bet. My advice is to find friends and live with them or look into Facebook groups. Finding a roommate is a practical necessity due to cost and honestly you might even like it.
- Monthly rent even with roommate was around $1K. This is on the lower end in america and you should expect to pay more.
- Accommodations are well connected to the university via buses.

Likes
- Research facilities - some of the best in the world
- Infrastructure - easily accessible buildings, well connected with the city, spacious
- Curriculum - there is something for everyone
Dislikes
- Community- Personally, I would have liked more outreach support
- Segregation fees- In spite of having a stipend, we had to pay segregation fees which can be financially demanding
Campus Life
While I wasn't very active in campus activities, there was no dearth of relevant campus events. However, most of them seemed to be catered towards undergraduate students.
Accommodation
On an average I had to pay around $750 per month for rent and other facilities (wifi, electricity and heat).
Likes
- Supporting advisor - Personally for Industrial Engineering we have a very kind advisor
Dislikes
- Cold - it gets really unbearable during the winters
- Lack of affordable grocery stores nearby
- Limited buses at night time, that is after 8pm
Campus Life
There are indeed a lot of clubs, unlimited fast WiFi, two great gyms, modified lab for research, updated computer systems.
Accommodation
Private room, 10 mins walk from college building, 650$ per month, around 50$ for utilities and 100-200$ for groceries.
Campus Life
As compared to other colleges the Indian diaspora is very low which is good and bad. A lot of extra curriculars. Student support is provided in terms of free (limited) groceries provided every Thursday, free food is not hard to find.
Accommodation
750 dollars per month rent for living on state street(downtown)
Likes
- The extracurricular activities and sports with the balance of academics is the thing i most like about my college, it is a place where we can have fun and study both at the same time.
Dislikes
- I hate the location as there is nothing to do apart from the campus life as Madison is a very small city. The winters in Madison are brutal and being from a city where it never snows it is tough to manage.
Campus Life
There are more than 100 clubs in the university and almost all the extracurricular activities that you can think of. The sports are very competitive and the WIFI connection is amazing.
Accommodation
Accommodation is very clean and there is construction going on to make it even better. the avg rentals will be around $1000 per month.

- Great set of coursework for computer engineering. Professors in the past have done pioneering research work. Tuition and cost of living is very affordable plus Madison is a very safe city.
- Madison is a very safe city with good public transport and the cost of living is less compared to other major cities. Tuition is also very affordable. Great coursework with strong emphasis on research and is one of the best universities for systems (OS, distributed, data systems, etc) engineering. Plenty of opportunities for TA/RA/part time.
Dislikes
- Weather is not very friendly but is manageable with the right set of clothes. All graduate level courses require you to read research papers on a regular basis and the projects will also be research centered. It will be difficult at first but you’ll soon get used to it.
Campus Life
Campus infrastructure is very good. Each department/school has clubs and organizations that hold meetings/game nights/social events to get to know each other and have fun. In addition, there’s also a lot of academic related events conducted by each professor.
Accommodation
I live at Eagle Heights which is the university’s graduate student housing location. Infrastructure is very good and very safe neighborhood (exclusively grad students, PhD and post docs). It’s a bit far from campus but you have excellent public transport.
