Dr. Saraswati Rajbongshi is the HOD of Assamese at Paschim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya. Not only doe she holds an M.A. in Assamese but also has an M.Phil. from the Department of Modern Indian Language, Gauhati University, 2001. Dr. Rajbongshi is a published author of a book titled, “Adhunik Asomiya Sahityat Dristipat.”
Besides her duties in education, she has published papers in the journal, Sampriti: A half yearly bilingual (Assamese English) Double Blind peer Reviewed National Research – Journal of Humanities and Social Science.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?
We have courses from undergraduate to postgraduate level in the Assamese language. In terms of new courses, the Assamese department has introduced a couple of postgraduate courses. These degrees are now open for admission to interested students.
What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?
The factors that make our Assamese courses the best for students are our teachers. We have highly qualified faculty members who also have years of teaching experience. They are extremely helpful and always ready to extend support to our students in any way possible.
What will you say the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?
We are following several best practices at our college to make our courses highly competitive. For instance, during the academic year, we organize field trips to institutes and organization we have MOUs with. Here they get a taste of what it is like to work in the industry and what skills they must possess to get a suitable job.

What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?
Some valuable insight into our Assamese programs is that we have many students who opt for higher education once they finish their degrees. Several of our students are pursuing PhD degrees in Assamese, which is a matter of great pride for us. Others have also qualified for the NBT and are working in notable positions.
How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?
We offer full support and guidance for our students to prepare for higher education and competitive examinations. Our faculty members are always there to answer our student's queries and doubts. We organize field trips and encourage internships and placements.
How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?
I have kept myself updated in the field. I am constantly learning new material and reading through reference books. I do not restrict myself to offline media and refer to digital books as well.
What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?
The biggest challenge we face is in terms of the economic background of our students. They are not able to buy the latest books and materials for our curriculum. We introduced digital books and course material for these students that they could access at their own convenience.
What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
Our students typically work on research based projects. These projects are done both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level courses. As an extension of this requirement, we also have students attend seminars and conferences.

What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?
A higher education degree in Assamese makes our students eligible for roles in academia. They can work as teachers at the school level and higher education level as well. Doctorate students can partake in research for Government organizations.
