Dr. Yashodhara Medhi is the HOD of the English department at Paschim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya. She has done M.A. in English and Ph.D. from Gauhati University in 2012, on the Topic of “Literal English Translation of the Plays of Sankaradeva with a Critical Appraisal”.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept. which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?
In our college, we have from higher secondary to undergraduate level courses in arts and commerce. We have general English alternative English and as prescribed by Guwahati University the affiliating University aur higher secondary council
What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?
We have Honors in English and earlier it is to be called major now it's honors and students opt for it and they are benefited from Honors of English which will help in the career option in future.

What would you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?
We have the wall magazine. We have word meaning boards where they display different words in both Hindi and English which change twice a week and it's mandatory for all the departments. It helps the students and they benefit by remembering different meanings each week. We also have a little magazine In which students write whatever comes to their mind so that they can be published and the basic concept of a little magazine is that smaller writers can get a chance to publish magazines. They also have poetry day work where they recite poems and also a chance is given for them to recite their own poem in whatever language they are comfortable the main idea is to know what poetry is and make students realize the importance of language and how they can express themselves everywhere.
What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?
By studying English as a major here, we don't have many students, but the key difference is that particular care is taken of each and every one of the students who are admitted. They are advised and given personalized attention in whatever situation they face.
How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?
For preparing for the future we advise them what are the best career options available for later on/ the pass-out students have done particularly very well In Guwahati University Students prepare for competitive exams and the pass out students published different articles.
How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?
We always try to update ourselves. We learn from new books and new courses. The junior staff helps us in learning the course and all of them are very active.
How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program?
We give them ideas on what are the different career options available in English major in English honors for the future in different types of industry. They can also go for publications not necessarily they will go for teaching their different options available.
What were the challenges that you faced while inculcating this program in your curriculum?
The problem is we do always not get good students. They don't Like to learn from textbooks. They always prepare the shortcut method, especially the literature students. Also many of the students come from poor family backgrounds and teaching them is very difficult as they are least interested in studying English.

What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
They contribute to the little magazine the right in the wall magazine they prepare for the word poetry and likewise comparative exams are also held when assignments are given to the students so they can well prepare for the exams.
What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?
There is one section in library where all sorts of comparative exams books are given to the students and students can take help from those books for the competitive exams
