Dr. J.V.C. Sharma is a professor and the principal of J.B.R. Pharmacy College. He obtained a B.Pharm, and an M.Pharm from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. Dr. Sharma also holds a PhD from JNTU, Hyderabad. He has 30 years of experience in teaching, research in various Pharmacy related fields. 

Dr. Sharma has published several authentic research papers in 40 different national and International journals. Moreover, he has been guiding many M.Pharm and PhD students in their project work. He has presented research papers at various conferences and seminars.

What motivated you to pursue a career in pharmacy education and eventually become a principal of a pharmacy college?

My motivation to pursue a career in pharmacy education stemmed from my passion for imparting knowledge and shaping the future of aspiring pharmacists. As an assistant professor, I recognized the impact I could make by nurturing young minds and equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the pharmacy field. 

Over time, I aspired to contribute at a broader level by shaping the overall educational experience and ensuring the highest standards of quality. My motivation lies in the belief that education is a powerful tool that can positively impact individuals and society as a whole. Seeing students succeed, excel in their careers, and make a difference in the healthcare field brings me immense satisfaction and reinforces my passion for pharmacy education. 


What are the key qualities and skills you believe a successful pharmacy college principal should possess?

A successful pharmacy college principal should possess a strong knowledge base of their field, exhibit effective leadership and management skills, and have excellent communication abilities. They must also demonstrate visionary thinking, prioritize student-centred approaches, foster collaborations, and uphold ethical and professional conduct. These qualities and skills contribute to the overall success and reputation of the college, ensuring quality education and a supportive environment for students and faculty alike.

Staying updated with the latest developments in pharmacy education is a top priority for us. We employ several strategies to ensure we remain at the forefront of the field. Our faculty members actively participate in continuous professional development activities, including attending conferences and workshops related to pharmacy education. We also foster collaborations and partnerships with industry professionals, researchers, and healthcare organizations. These connections provide us with valuable insights into current practices and advancements in the field. 

Additionally, our faculty members are encouraged to become members of professional pharmacy associations. These associations offer resources, publications, and networking opportunities that keep us informed about the latest developments in pharmacy education.


Can you share any notable achievements or success stories of your pharmacy college under your leadership?

Under my leadership, I am proud to share some notable achievements and success stories of our pharmacy college. Our faculty members have made significant contributions to research in the field of pharmacy. They have also received recognition for their research work. In the past year alone, more than 10 faculty members were honored with prestigious awards and accolades for their outstanding contributions to the field. Our college has witnessed remarkable success in student achievements. Our students consistently excel in academic competitions, national-level examinations, and research presentations. 

Moreover, our college has developed strong collaborations with leading pharmaceutical companies and healthcare institutions. These collaborations have resulted in numerous industry-sponsored research projects, internships, and job placements for our students. 


What are the major challenges you foresee for pharmacy education in the coming years, and how do you plan to address them?

In the coming years, pharmacy education will face challenges in keeping up with advancements in pharmaceutical science, adapting to the changing healthcare landscape, addressing workforce demands, integrating technology, promoting interprofessional education, and complying with regulatory changes. To tackle these challenges, we will establish collaborations with industry professionals, foster partnerships with healthcare institutions, monitor the job market, and incorporate technology-focused courses. We also promote interprofessional teamwork and stay updated on regulatory changes. Regular assessment, stakeholder engagement, and faculty development will ensure our pharmacy education remains relevant and prepares students for successful careers.
