Ans. The workload for M.Tech Mechanical students is quite manageable at SVNIT.  In the first year of M.Tech, one has to complete the coursework and attend classes from 8:30 am to 5:40 pm. In the second year, one has to complete the dissertation work and Teaching Assistant Duty (which is for 8 hours per week). SVNIT offers five M.Tech specializations in the related fields. These are- Mechanical Engineering, CAD/CAM, Thermal System Design, Turbo Machines and Manufacturing Engineering. The workload varies from department to department. One gets ample time to prepare for competitive exams as an M.Tech Mechanical student over here. Ans. The placement is not good for M.Tech courses. Pursuing an M.Tech from SVNIT is a better option if one wishes to prepare for competitive exams simultaneously. Taking out time for preparation isn’t difficult if one is focused and disciplined. In 2022,18 students were successfully placed on campus from M.Tech Mechanical. The highest package was 9.42 LPA, the average package was 6.86 LPA, and the lowest package was 5 LPA. As for M.Tech Manufacturing, 21 students were successfully placed on campus. The highest package was 9.58 LPA, the average package was 6.29 LPA, and the lowest package was 4.80 LPA.  Some M.Tech specializations like Computer Science, Communications System, CAD/CAM and Structure receive a few core companies for placements. But that number is far from satisfactory. Moreover, very few people are selected for these jobs. Mechanical, Thermal System Design, SMFE and MSc. Physics,mainly receive teaching offers.  Thus, the placements for M.Tech Mechanical are not satisfactory at SVNIT. Read more

Ans. In all engineering colleges, BTech students are given more preference than MTech students because they can do the job at a lesser salary than MTech students. Moreover, they are more in number and are ready to grab any role whatsoever. MTech students on the other hand prefer core jobs that align with their academic profile and specific interests. So the placement opportunities offered to Masters students are less. Mostly, they have two options to choose from, academia or corporate.  Academics: Many institutes offer teaching positions to master students either as a college professor or for the role of an instructor at an Entrance Exam preparation institute, Master students of the Thermal branch are eligible for these roles.  Corporate: The Mechanical department students are often recruited by companies like GE, Mercedes, Bosch, Yazaki, Alstom, etc. do come for recruitment. The requirements vary each year. In reality, the chances of landing a job as an MTech student at NIT Surathkal depend on the market rather than the institute. NITK offers a great research culture that instills all the necessary skills. The placements are unpredictable though. Ans. My brother had to appear for an online interview because he applied during the corona time. He joined Google Meet on time and began with his introductions. The interviewers asked him a number of questions like Describe the college you did your bachelor's from and the placement scenario there Is there any topic you are most comfortable with for the technical questions? What is compressible flow and compressible fluid? what is internal energy? PV^? what are its assumptions? Define isoentropic process dh = M Cp dt where can we apply this? Is it valid for gases only? Define Cp and Cv For solids why do we use Q=mcdt .what is C here? Why is solid C constant here? Basically, he was bombarded with a lot of technical questions although they helped him a lot. Ans. Well honestly, once you are in the grasp of the IISc magic, you will forget about placements, and your hunger for higher studies and research will grow instead. The intense workload and the dynamic research environment will bring you close to some of the geniuses who may be pursuing a Ph.D., UG, or master's. Interacting with them will make you realize that higher studies are a better option. Some who go for jobs anyway, come back to get a PhD sometime later. This is what the IISc effect is after all. As for the IISC placements for MTech Mechanical Engineering, students receive a minimum of 8 LPA packages with no limit on top packages varying from 15-25 LPA CTC.
