The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has decided to reduce the level of Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus by 30%. The same was reportedly decided at the recent meeting of the academic committee of the Council.

This decision was taken to keep in mind the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the reduction of the syllabus will be a one-time measure, as will only be followed for the current academic session.

Sources indicate that the AHSEC will soon issue a notification in this regard. The 30 per cent reduction in the syllabus will be implemented for both Class 11 and Class 12 students in all streams. Arts, Commerce and Science streams under certain conditions. Sources also suggested that the formal notification of the reduction of the syllabus is likely to be issued by August 31, 2020.

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated earlier on August 01, 2020 that both the AHSEC and the Board of Secondary Education, popularly known as SEBA, were advised either to reduce the syllabus or to supplement the question paper with a maximum number of options.

As academic activities have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 lockdown, the Minister said that this will ensure that students do not face difficulties even if part of the syllabus is not completed.

The State Department of Education also reportedly set up a task force to decide on the reopening of educational institutions. It is likely that the educational institutions will be opened in a phased manner.

The Government of Assam is considering the reopening of educational institutions from September 01, 2020 onwards, subject to the approval of the Central Government.
