New Delhi: IIT Madras Alumni and CSR have joined hands to support BTech students with 'Merit-cum-Means' scholarships. This initiative covers full tuition fees for those with annual parental income in the INR 1 lakh to INR 5 lakh' category for two consecutive years (2022-23 and 2023-24).
The MCM scholarship, combined with a two-third tuition fee waiver by the Indian Government, aids eligible EWS/GE/OBC category students, enabling them to focus on their studies without financial concerns.
In 2022-23, IIT Madras offered financial aid of INR 3.26 crore to 490 students and INR 3.30 crore has been committed for 495 students in 2023-24. The per-student scholarship is INR 66,667, disbursed in two halves each semester.
Additional alumni-funded scholarships at IIT Madras are available based on academic performance. Students with parental income below INR 1 lakh receive full tuition fee waivers.
A Look at the Scholarships Provided by IIT Madras
At IIT Madras, SC/ST students in the MA programs with parental income less than INR 4.5 lakh are offered various concessions, including free mess facilities, a monthly allowance, and exemptions from tuition fees and hostel rent. Twenty-five per cent of MA program students with parental income below INR 4.5 lakh receive merit scholarships.
Moreover, meritorious BTech students at IIT Madras receive scholarships from NCERT, the central government, and the state government. The Tamil Nadu Scholarship, offered by the Directorate of Backward Class/ Directorate of Most Backward Class, is among these.
Those enrolling in the MTech program through GATE receive Half-Time Teaching Assistantships (HTTA) at INR 12,400 monthly.
MSc program entrants are granted INR 1,000 per month under the merit scholarship and tuition fee exemptions. Full-time PhD and engineering students receive Half-Time Teaching/Research Assistantships (HTRA) at INR 37,000 monthly for the initial two years and INR 42,000 for the subsequent three years.
IIT Madras supports research scholars in presenting papers at international conferences by providing financial assistance. The financial aid for MS and PhD scholars is capped at INR 1,50,000, including registration fees.
