Management, MCA Receives Highest Enrollment in 5 Years and Pharmacy Lowest: AICTE

New Delhi: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has shared that during the academic year 2022-23, enrollment in management and MCA programs reached its highest point in five years, while pharmacy experienced the lowest enrollment in the same period.

AICTE provided statistics that also highlight a notable trend in the enrollment of women, showing a preference for architecture, planning, and design courses. Specifically, 55.99% of students in architecture and planning were women, and 66.21% of those in design courses were women. On the other hand, hotel management recorded the lowest female participation at 18.2%.

MBA Admissions: Intake vs. Enrollment

In the academic year 2022-23, AICTE approved an intake of 4,22,628 seats, with 2,85,367 students being enrolled. This signifies that 67.5% of the approved seats were filled. Among the total enrolled students, 57.89% were men, and 42.11% were women.

The AICTE-approved courses encompass a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a postgraduate diploma in management (PGDM).

During the academic year 2018-19, management courses registered the lowest student intake in five years, admitting 2,37,497 students compared to the approved intake of 3,74,264. This resulted in a seat occupancy rate of 63%.

Singh said, “First, the way the market pays these management graduates, the interest will certainly go up. Their pay packages are much higher than those received by other course students. Second, there are a lot of engineers who want to pursue a career in management,”

Pharmacy Admission Overview

In 2022-23, the pharmacy courses received the lowest enrollment. During that year, only 19,379 students were enrolled out of a total approved intake of 1,04,723, amounting to just 18.5%.

This marked a significant decline from the 2021-22 academic year, where 71,682 students were enrolled out of 1,06,293 seats. After 2019-20, the course's approved seats were 2,75,789, which started to drop.

Ramesh Goyal, vice chancellor of Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU), explained, “The pharmacy courses are now exclusively run by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). There was a Supreme Court judgement which went in favour of PCI and stated that AICTE would not have control over pharmacy institutes. The process started in the last two years and from 2023-24 sessions PCI would give recognition. Previously, we were taking approval from AICTE as we could get the advantage of the various schemes.”
