CBSE has now decided to increase the weightage of MCQs in class 12 board examinations. Previously the board has also decided to reduce the syllabus of class 12 by 30% owing to the cancellation of physical classes.

Due to the stringent lockdown imposed throughout the country since March, all the educational institutions from the lower to the highest including CBSE schools have been shut. For months, many schools did not start online classes which gave a huge setback to the students.

As such, to ease their burdens the CBSE board had decided to reduce the syllabus to help the students cope up with the pressure. Despite this, problems still persisted since learning outcomes in online classes were far lower than those in physical classrooms.

Keeping this in mind, the decision to give more weightage to the multiple-choice based questions was taken. Compared to the original format, CBSE has increased the weightage of MCQs by as much as 10% in the recently released sample paper for Class 10 and 12.

For subjects like physics, more questions that tested the thinking skills of the students have been introduced while in Biology short answer type questions have been included.

In English, almost 50% of questions in the paper would be of objective type, while case study based questions would be given in math and physics.

Geetha Govindarajan, the principal of a Senior Secondary School said that the new pattern of question paper was more focused on the comprehension and understanding of the subject rather than the remember and recall approach that used to be applied previously.

She said that the question papers earlier were focused on knowledge and now they are shifted towards application and understanding of a concept. However, the paper appears to be lengthy, and as such schools should provide practice to their students.

Many other principals also agreed and said that most of the students have not been practising for a full three hours test as most of the practice tests are only limited to 90 minutes. Many schools are worried about it and are taking measures for it.

Mr. Vijyan, another principal said that the productivity of online classes was only around 50% compared to offline classes which have proved to be a big roadblock for the students. As such, all the students needed more practice in the new paper format.
