New Delhi: As per the official notification released by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), medical students will have to appear for a single exit exam National Exit Test for admission. 

According to the information, the NExT exam for each discipline such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Dowa Rigpa will be conducted by the commission through a designated authority. 

The press release stated, “The National Exit Test will be held for granting a license to practice as a medical practitioner of the respective discipline of the Indian System of medicine and for the enrollment in the State Register or the National Register as a registered medical practitioner of the Indian System of medicine after completing a year of internship”.

The NExT will be conducted twice a year, in February and August. The test will comprise problem-based questions, to evaluate clinical competency, understanding of medical ethics, and ability to manage medico-legal issues as a medical practitioner in the fields of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa as applicable.

The press also mentioned that “without qualifying for the National Exit Test, any graduate in the field of ayurvedic medicine and surgery or bachelor of Unani medicine and surgery will not be eligible to enroll in the state register or national register, as the case may be.”

NCISM requested that the principals of Ayush, Siddha, Unani, and Sowa Rigpa colleges advise all interns and final-year students at their respective institutions about the NExT test. NCISM must finish the test procedure within three years of the NExT exam's implementation date.

NExT Exam Eligibility Criteria

The National Exit Test, or NExT exam, will apply to undergraduate medical students. The draft guidelines for the NExT exam outline certain eligibility criteria, including:

  1. All undergraduate medical students enrolled in MBBS programs from medical colleges approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
  2. Foreign Medical Graduates who have been approved by the NMC to obtain a license to practice medicine as a registered medical practitioner in India.
  3. Individuals holding a medical degree for purposes such as pursuing academic courses, observerships, or any other purposes specified and approved by the NMC.

These criteria provide a framework for determining who is eligible to take the NExT exam, ensuring that it encompasses both domestic and international medical graduates, as well as individuals seeking further education or specialized training in the medical field.
