New Delhi: National Law University (NLU) Delhi and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London have partnered to offer a pioneering one-year Joint LLM/MA in Environmental Justice in South Asia.

This joint degree offered by NLU Delhi, co-designed and co-awarded by both institutions, allows students to divide their study time between SOAS London and NLU Delhi.

Speaking on the shared vision behind this initiative, Professor G.S. Bajpai, Vice Chancellor of NLU Delhi, emphasized, “Both Universities share a common vision to serve communities at large by empowering them with solutions to solve the many problems that our generation faces.”

Notably, this unique course seeks to break barriers by making quality education more accessible and affordable to international students. Offering a pathway for global exchange and learning, the program enables students to study in a prestigious institution like SOAS, University of London, at only half the typical fees charged to international students.

SOAS Director, Adam Habib underscored the significance of equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge to address environmental justice, stating, “The major problems of our age span national boundaries. We wish to demonstrate this with the new partnership; how universities in the Global South and the Global North can come together to remove barriers to education and how we can ramp up the international exchange of expertise to help address the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced.”

This collaboration aligns with NLU Delhi’s commitment to internationalization and innovation under the National Education Policy, 2020. It offers students a well-rounded experience, combining classroom teaching in both locations with a clinical component in India and culminating in a dissertation. This holistic approach prepares students for advanced careers in research, academia, policy-making, international development, and strategic litigation.

Professor Bajpai highlighted the focus on clinical legal pedagogy to provide students with valuable learning experiences in environmental justice. Additionally, Professor Ruhi Paul, Registrar of NLU Delhi, emphasized the benefits of this partnership for students passionate about addressing climate crises. This collaboration is not just favorable to the involved institutions but also beneficial for students, fostering a dialogue between the Global South and North on crucial environmental concerns.

The agreement signifies a significant step towards breaking down barriers in education, fostering global collaboration, and empowering students with tools to tackle the pressing challenges of our times. This initiative aims to bridge geographical divides, providing a platform for students to contribute meaningfully to the global discourse on environmental justice.
