Foreseeing the future of PG medical education, the National Medical Comission (NMC) has now integrated the National Exit Test (NExT) as a prerequisite for PG medical admissions while adding that NEET PG will continue till the first batch of NExT

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently taken a significant step in reforming postgraduate medical education in India by integrating the National Exit Test (NExT) as a prerequisite.
This move aims to standardize and enhance the quality of medical education and evaluation in the country. NExT will serve as a critical examination that aspiring doctors need to clear before pursuing their postgraduate medical education.
This comes as through a recent public notice, the PG Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the NMC has released the draft PG Medical Regulations (PGMER) 2023.
Inviting comments regarding the draft regulations, the Under Secretary of NMC PG Board further mentioned in the notice dated September 6, 2023, “It is requested to share comments on the draft regulations at the following email id comments.pqregulations@nm.org.in in MS Word (docx) format or machine readable PDF format within 10 days from the date of publication of this notice with a subject tagline “Comments on draft Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023.”
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has created the draught regulation known as the "Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023" or "PGMER-23" in accordance with the broad authority granted by the National Medical Commission Act of 2018 with respect to medical education in general and specifically by sub-section (1) of Section 25 and section (2) of Section 57 of the same Act.
According to the draft from NMC PGMEB, "These regulations shall take effect as of the date of their publication in the official gazette."
NMC has discussed the purpose and objective of postgraduate medical education in Chapter 1 of the draught as well as the definitions of various terms used in the draught, such as "Act," "Commission," "Medical Institution," "MSR," "“NEET PG” and “NEET SS" etc.
Courses of specialisation and PG training components were mentioned in Chapter 2 of the draught. This comprises a list of requirements, the length of the programme, and the PG training and curriculum components.
In Chapter 3 of the draught, the topic of establishing PG Medical Colleges and launching new PG Medical Programs is covered. This chapter covers topics including authorization, accreditation, seat expansion, standard-setting for medical education, and minimal requirements.
The information in Chapter 4 relates to admission and counselling. It covers topics such as eligibility requirements, NEET-SS procedures, common counselling, admission dates for PG Broad Specialty programs, deadlines for completing the PG (super speciality) medical program admission process, information about the government-designated designated authority for common counselling, prohibitions against students seeking admission in any other way than through counselling, submission of the final list, student migration, seat reservations, and feeder broad spec program.
Chapter 5 of the draft contains information about training PG students. These specifics include the length of the training and the nature of the training initiatives, including common course work.
NExT as a prerequisite for postgraduate medical education in India represents a significant reform in the medical education system. The release of draft guidelines for public comments underscores the NMC's commitment to transparency and stakeholder input, ensuring that the final framework aligns with the highest standards of medical education and evaluation.
