New Delhi: The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare shared in its 157th report, “Quality of Medical Education in India,” in Rajya Sabha. The report states that medical seats both in UG and PG courses are critical and there is a need for an increase in admission seats.
According to the committee, “With an annual influx of approximately 2 million aspiring medical students at UG and only 1/20 times as many available seats, the demand far exceeds the supply; similarly, the number of available seats at PG level is far less than the demand.”
The committee has taken note of the detailed Minimum Standards Regulations (UG-MSR) notified on August 16, 2023. The panel further recommended to the Union Health Ministry that it is imperative to make the best use of the current infrastructure.
Ensuring that all available resources and facilities are utilized efficiently can help accommodate a larger number of MBBS and PG medical students without compromising the quality of education. Moreover, streamlining the admission process by implementing a standardized national entrance examination can improve fairness and transparency in seat allocation.
The committee noted that, based on the guidelines for opening a new medical college, the permission for an increase in MBBS seats from the academic year 2024-25 will be granted for 50,100 and 150 seats.
It is recommended by the committee that the ministry leverage technology for distance learning and organize virtual classrooms that can be a solution to address the problem regarding the shortage of seats, which will allow more students to access medical education without burdening physical infrastructure.
