The Supreme Court lodged a petition at the hearing on September 14, 2020 challenging the decision of the CBSE to carry out compartmental exams for students of classes X and XII in September and calling for provisional admissions to universities.
Senior advocate Vivek Tankha, appearing for petitioners, told the bench that compartment exams usually take place before college admissions.
Judges AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna on Thursday directed the petitioner to send copies of the petition to the Union of India to consider their prayer for the provisional admission of such students to universities.
Senior advocate Vivek Tankha, appearing for petitioners, told the bench that compartment exams usually take place before college admissions.
He said it was understandable that the CBSE could not hold the examinations at the outset because of the COVID-19 situation. "Then there was a hybrid variety of tests, and then the results were declared, and as a result, a lot of people were undergoing compartment tests," Tankha added.

The most important thing is that if students are not admitted to college after the compartment exams have been completed, then their entire year will be wasted, Tankha argued, while urging the court to create some room for such students to be admitted.
Tankha sought a direction to give provisional admissions to universities to students.
Earlier on a similar plea, the CBSE had informed the court that CBSE was likely to conduct a compartment examination for students of classes X and XII at the end of September and that the number of examination centres had been increased to 1,278.
