IIT Kanpur's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering generally promises better job and package prospects compared to IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Civil Engineering. The tech field is booming, and companies like Google and Amazon actively seek computer science graduates, leading to higher placement rates and packages, with some exceeding 2.65 crores. While IIT Delhi has strong placements, especially in civil, the opportunities in tech fields are more lucrative, and internships are plentiful in CS. If you’re looking for a higher salary and diverse job options, IIT Kanpur is the way to go; however, if you’re passionate about civil engineering, IIT Delhi offers a solid program but with potentially lower financial returns.
IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Civil Engineering offers a solid curriculum with highly qualified faculty and a focus on self-learning, but the student-to-faculty ratio in lectures can be overwhelming. On the other hand, IIT Kanpur's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering likely has better internship and placement opportunities since tech giants frequently recruit from there. While IIT Delhi excels in campus life with vibrant festivals and robust extracurriculars, IIT Kanpur may provide a more lucrative path with its tech-centric environment. Personally, I'd recommend IIT Kanpur for its stronger placements in the tech industry, especially if you're inclined towards computer science. However, if you have a passion for civil engineering and value a rich campus life, IIT Delhi could still be the right fit for you.
If you have a specific interest in a branch offered at one of the institutes and not the other, go for it! For example, IIT Kanpur has Aerospace Engineering, which IIT Delhi lacks.
If you reside in or near Delhi or Kanpur, consider choosing based on location to save on travel costs.
If you’re neutral about the branches and want the best option for top placements, aim for whichever prestigious institute offers you CSE or IT.
Ranking-wise, location-wise, cutoff-wise, and exposure-wise, IIT Delhi has a slight edge over IIT Kanpur.
For instance, if your rank is a two-digit number and you want CSE, choose IIT Delhi over IIT Kanpur.
However, if your rank falls between 150 - 300 and you’re looking for CSE, you won’t get it at IIT Delhi. In that case, opt for IIT Kanpur or Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, or Guwahati (in that order of preference).
Don’t pass up CSE at any of the remaining top IITs for Electrical at IIT Delhi or Bombay unless you have a strong passion for pursuing Electrical Engineering.
For other branches like Civil, Mechanical, Power and Automation, BioTech, etc., IIT Delhi is slightly better than IIT Kanpur. But the difference isn’t massive!
It's true that all IITs are great. But if I had to choose between these two, I'd go for IIT Kanpur.
Why, you ask? Just hang on…
When comparing the lifestyles, expenses, and facilities in these two cities, Delhi takes the lead while Kanpur falls short in this regard.
The reason I prefer IIT Kanpur is that life is more valuable, and I don't want to spend it in the hazardous smog of Delhi. It's like knowing that tasting cyanide will kill you, yet still feeling excited to try it.
