A WALK THROUGH GEC

Our college provides a great platform to improve and develop students skill set. It transforms students to talented engineers with creativity and integrity who can meet technological challenges for the service of society. It is having great infrastructure which the students can utilize to learn and explore new skills. Centralized AC in labs are great. Every classroom is a smart classroom with wifi providing students to browse,learn and explore in their feild of education. College is situated in a remote place and the only difficulty is to reach there. There are no adequate bus services which is a big drawback of our college. Also water supply issue is present during summer water scarcity is a great issue in our college and at times leaves are provided because of the same. Placement is low compared to other colleges which is again one of its negative traits.

Am a computer science student under KTU University. To say about the course and curriculum this course consists total of 4 years which includes 8 semesters. First year we'll be studying general engineering aspects which includes basics of all engineering departments also physics chemistry is included in first year B-tech syllabus. Graphics and mechanics are the main difficult subjects of first year.Second year we will be studying more abot computer science and engineering. We will enter into core subjects still electronics and other subjects like business economics , life skills are there.In third year its purely core subjects. Engineering mathematics is present in first and second year. To say about the examination each subject is outof 150 marks. 50 marks is of internals and rest of the 100 is the external exam (sem exam). Internal exam is split into two series and one assignment exam. Each series exam is of 20 marks and the assignment test is of 10 marks grand total of 50. A student needs to get 23/50 to be able to appear for the sem exam and in sem exam a minimum of 45 marks is needed to pass the exam.

Our college doesn't stand at the top when it comes to the placements and job opportunities. Even though the college succeeds to transform students into talented engineers they fail to give us better campus placements and job opportunities. Many of the students gets placements through off campus placement drives. It doesn't mean than none of the companies visits our college, a total of 47 different companies have visited our college till now which includes the major recruiting companies like Accenture, C-DAC, Cognizant,HCL,HP,IBM,oracle,Q-Burst,SAP Labs,QuEST Global,TCS,Wipro to name a few. Our college is having a career guidance and placement unit (CGPU)which is really active and working hard to get their talented students to find a good job. CGPU also imparts placement oriented training to the students with emphasis on soft skills. CGPU helps the student find good internships but our college doesn't provide one. Students goes out for internship purpose. CGPU have helped one of our college student to get an internship in Taiwan as well.

As our college is a government colleges its having parties in it like SFI,UDSF and few more. So based on parties each and every small thing is being celebrated as an event. The main highlighting events celebrated by our college is our technical fest which is “Invento” and our cultural program “Dhaksha”.Invento is the intra college technical fest which is conducted once in an year which will be a three to four days fest. Similarly Dhaksha is also a 2 days event but it is an inter college event. These are the main attractive events of GEC PKD. We also celebrate a pre event for both these main events called logo launch by inviting celebraties and including cultural programs. Magazine release is also another main event conducted by our college,which again involes the welcoming of celebraties followed by magazine release and few cultural events there after.Onam is also celebrated in a grant manner, where sadhya is given to all students and staffs. Sports day event is also conducted every year without fail. Sometimes we also celebrate kerala piravi day on november 1st.

Ours is a government engineering college and fees are all fixed by the KTU and govt. Our fees is Rs 9750 for an year which is extremely feasible compared to other private engineering colleges. Initially during admission purpose they ask for depositing few amounts as fee for different purpose which includes a sum of Rs 5000 for bus maintenance fee which is a one time fee which all students need to pay. After paying that amount hostlers are allowed to go in bus for free and day scholars need to pay an extra amount for getting a bus card which is also really affordable. We can never tell that our college fee is expensive since it is prescribed by the government and no extra amount is collected from the students in extra.

I haven't availed any scholarship from our college neither our college is providing any scholarships. Our college helps students recieve the scholarships given by the government and acts as a mediator between the two. Scolarships given by the government via our college are E-grantz, MSM scholarships. MSM scholarships are recieved by muslim students based on merit and their income. E-grantz scholarship is recieved by all SC/ST /OEC students and its also give to economically backward OBC and GENERAL category students. Through this scholarship students get back their tuition fee and also provides pocket money for hostler students for their need. The amount give to each students varies according to their category.

Our college provides a lot of extra curricular activities. There are many clubs in our college which includes FOSS,IEEE,IEDC in which technical activities are carried on. These are really active and conducts many hands on experience with their effective workshops and hackathons conducted by them. Other clubs includes the Design club where posters for events and other college purposes are developed. Tech team is present which prepares the websites, apps and other technical activites for the betterment of college events. Media team captures all exotic moments with thier super shooting skills. Sports club includes different sports events which includes cricket,football,basketball,table-tennis to name a few. Dance club is also really active in our college. Our college is having music and band team again which is really active. Labs are really good in infrastructure with all computer labs having centralized AC. Electronics and mechanical labs are also in good conditions. We are having a big computer lab other than our department labs called CCF where any students of any departments can go and browse. Wifi connection is available throughout the college-hours. Project labs and seminar halls are also available for presentation purpose. Drawing halls are present for every departments as well.

Aluminis are of great help to us. They visits our college during their free time shares their knowledge,experiences with us. Aluminis have also contributed funds for our college events and also to improve our infrastructure. Physics lab in our college is built by the fund provided by our aluminis. Also they help us by referring students in their respective workstations. Senior students are also really helpful. They help their juniors by giving them extra classes after college hours. Also they help us by providing notes and textbooks of theirs which are really needful during exam times. They help us by providing technical skills as they use to conduct talks and small workshops which helps us in increasing our skills. They discuss about their project ideas which also helps us in understanding and getting more ideas on how to choose our projects in an effective manner. They also tell us about their interviews how those procedures are and how they succeeded in getting placed in those companies. These talks helps us in knowing things and are of a great help to us.

After my 12 th exam I had my KEAM exam that is the engineering entrance examination. Inorder to appear for this exam I had to apply for the KEAM exam. When the application forms are out it will be informed to everyone through newspaper and the last date will be informed along with it. I applied online through the KEAM portal whose link was provided to us in the newspaper. Only those students who have studied physics , chemistry and mathematics in their 12th are eligible for applying. Admission is based upon the ranks obtained in this exam. Rank will be based on merit giving equal weightage for 12th marks and KEAM scores. My rank was 12847. We will have to opt the colleges and courses according to our wish. Then based on the ranks we will be alloted to certain colleges. There are a total of three allotments. I was alloted 'EC' in GEC wayannad during my first allotment. Am from general category and getting into a govt engg college with a general quota with this rank was impossible. I got into the college with the SD (serving defense) quota. 2nd allotment was also the same. In 2nd allotment we will have to go to our respective colleges which are alloted to us and take an admission there. So I got there and took my admission and waited for my 3rd allotment to come. In my 3rd allotment I got into GEC PALAKKAD where iam currently pursuing my B-tech degree. So after the 3rd allotment came I went back to GEC wayannad took a TC from there and joined in GEC PALAKKAD.

Our college faculties are really good. To be more specific computer science department faculty and staffs are the best. Our college is having a set of best staffs though some of them are not upto the mark. Every faculty members are qualified enough to their post also many of them teaches very well. Most of our teachers are holding a doctorate nd are having high level qualifications. Many are having PhD and some teachers are just Mtech but still they have good teaching skill. But tehre are certain teachers who are having good qualifications but still they fail to teach us effectively may be because they are unable to convey what they are trying to teach, properly to the students. But overall faculty members are good. Teachers are interactive with the students. Mostly all teachers know every students name and know them personally. Teachers uses effictive way to teach and make students understand. PPT are always used along with blackboard teaching for better understanding.
