Remarks

The buildings are not connected. There are 4 buildings in total. And the older buildings are not fully air conditioned. A very positive environment, where everyone is helping one another. The teacher- student relationship is also very amicable.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

MSc Applied Geology is a two year course of study. The exam is a semester based exam comprising 4 semesters. The odd semester is from July to December while the even semester is from January to June. My subject is a practical based subject so each semester a portion of marks is alloted to practicals and educational field training. Total marks for the post graduation course of study is 2000.

Placement Experience

4

We do have a placement cell in our college. Moreover there is a good placement record from our department in various geotechnical companies and undertakings. Most of our seniors have been placed in different companies. Also a few have cracked NET and got offered lecturer posts in colleges and to pursue further studies. We are provided with internships during the 2nd semester of our course. Generally we are encouraged by our teachers to apply for interships in various institutions of India like the IITs and Wait Institute of Himalayan Geology. We have to undergo a compulsory industrial training of 2-3 weeks at a corporate house / industry during the 3rd semester.

College Events

4.5

Most of the national holidays are celebrated in our college. Moreover we have a cultural festival organised every year. During that time inter college competitions are held. Cultural performances are given by renowned artists. Sports Day, Foundation Day, Independence Day, Saraswati Puja are celebrated every year in the college premises. Inter department football and cricket leagues are held every year. "Posto theke Pasta" is an unique event held in the college canteen where students set up stalls serving different food and cuisines. Each and every department celebrates the freshers welcome and farewell and teacher's day.

Fee Structure And Facilities

While the fees structure for most of the courses in graduation is quite feasible some of the subjects have an expensive fees structure. The fees structure of the post graduate department is expensive too. The fees of my course per year is around 41k.

Fees and Financial Aid

Scholarships are offered to meritorious students who belong from a poorer section. Moreover some concessions are given to students who are not able to pay the fees. There is also a facility to pay the fees in an installment system. But all the above facilities are based on your financial condition and need to applied for to the principal, who then checks and grants you permission for the same.

Campus Life

4

There is a gym, sports ground, common room equipped with indoor games, library and a reading room in the college. Each and every department have their own library which can be accessed by the students. The labs are large and spacious and alloted according to the departments. There is also a computer section present in the library for the students. Wif is present in the college building and a cheap book store and photo copy shop has been built in the premises.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is very strong and there are always some reunions happening. But haven't heard of any official alumni association. There is an amicable relationship between the juniors and the seniors.

Admission

Asutosh College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Admission to the postgraduate courses is done by Calcutta University. The admission process is of two types - Part A and Part B. Part A is direct admission with respect to the marks secured in graduation for the students of Calcutta University. Part B is earmarked for all students and is through an entrance test. Part A has 60% seats and Part B has 40% seats. Entrance test is done in online mode and of mcq type based on the respective subject. Admission is alloted based on the rank secured in either of the lists. If a person has secured ranks in both the list, the higher preference is given priority. I got admission through the Part A of the process.

Faculty

4.5

The faculty here comprises an entire spectra from excellent to average to bad. It also varies department wise ; some departments have a plethora of great teachers while others lack them. Our department comprises of 6 full time professors and a few part time lecturers. Other than that we also have visiting faculty from other colleges.

Placement Experience:

Actually this is a general degree University , so I must mention that placement facalities are not so good. But yes , Job Fair is organised in University by some external agencies which offer jobs varying 2-2.5 lakhs per annum . But in the university most of the students do not accept that jobs. Half of the students are more interested on the higher studies. So ahet completing the fourth semester they prepare for PhD. And the another half are preparing for central government sponsored exams like CGL, CHSL, RRB, SBI , IBPS, LIC etc. University has a significant number of students who have qualified for Government Competitive exams.

Course Curriculum Overview:

My decision to choose this course depended on the fact that this course provides you with the opportunity to get various jobs in the industries with a high lpa. But this college does not help much in that aspect. All I had to do was myself. It is my humble opinion that the institution should improve its guidance in the area of its teaching methods. The exams were twice a year and were quite difficult on their own.

Biotechnology is a highly demanding course in today's world. The syllabus for this course is mostly around bookish knowledge and you have to gather outside knowledge on your own. There must be an internship for every student arranged by department itself in various other institues or labs for practical work experience.
