Remarks
The campus is situated in a suburban area, need to go to Kolkata which is 130 km faraway to get to a airport, no branded quick service restaurants except subway. Its the largest IIT with 2200 acres green lavish campus. There are many food stalls and night canteens inside the campus. There is a auditorium where latest movies are played every week, you won't be needing to go out of the campus for recreation.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is very well planned according to the needs of the student. From 3rd year, students can select some course he/she would like to do known as electives and also can do a minor in any other department. There are around 10 lectures(each 1 hour) and 3 labs (each 3 hours) per week. There are two examinations per semester mid-sem (mid of semester) and end-sem (end of semester) exams. The daily routine is very free in the start of the semester but becomes slightly hectic as the class tests and exams approach.
Placement Experience
IIT Kharagpur is famous for its campus placements and their packages, every year 3 to 4 students get 1cr+ lpa package. Every computer science student has to do atleast one internship during summer vacation after their 3rd year. I am still in my 1st year so I don't know much I about the companies and the stipend
College Events
IIT Kharagpur conducts 2 fests every year. One kshitij (tech fest) and the other is spring fest (cultural fest). The budget for kshitij is nearly 33 lakhs where as for spring fest is nearly 1. 3 crore. In the both fests there is a huge amount of participation from different colleges all over India.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee here is nearly 1. 4 lakh rupees per semester, 1. 1 lakh for tution fee and 30, 000 for hostel. Hostel fee mandatory because it is mandatory for every student to stay in hostel. There may be extra due added to the fee at the end of the semester upto 3, 000 rupees depending on the events took place during the semester.
Fees and Financial Aid
Here SBI and PNB give education loan at low interest rate. As per my knowledge there is no scholarship for b. tech students but for sc/st/pwd there is fee waiver. For b. sc students there is a concession on their tution fee and they can also avail their kvpy scholarship.
Campus Life
Every student has to opt for any EAA (extra academic activity) among NCC, NSS, NSO. There are many societies here like robotrix, encore (dramatic society), tfps (film making society, breakfree (dance society) etc. where students can join voluntarily according to their interests and learn and develop their skills from their seniors. Every year inter iit sports meet takes place during winter holidays students whi are talented in sports can represent their college in this sports meet.
Hostel Facilities
It is mandatory for every student to stay in hostel both ug and pg and there is no option for being a day scholar. The hostels are available in both sharing (in 2s and 3s) and single rooms. Hostels are fine with almost all necessary facilities like lan port, wifi, geyser etc. The average rent is nearly 30, 000 (including mess fee) rupees per semester.
Alumni/Alumna
IIT Kharagpur has the largest alumni network than any college in India. Alumni meet is conducted every year by the campus. Seniors are also very friendly and ragging is completely banned in the campus. The campus every student a mentor from the same department he/she is in so that the students take suggestions and get their queries related to both academics and non academics answered by their mentors.
Admission
IITs are well known for their academics and their campus placements. To get into IITs one have to clear both the levels of JEE (joint entrance examination). The first level is JEE mains which consists of 90 short mcq type questions. Once the minimum cutoff is scored the candidate may be able to write JEE advanced which consists two exams each with 60 long questions (multi correct mcq, integer type, paragraph type etc. ). The candidate may then chose the IIT he would join through online counseling done by JoSAA (joint seat allocation authority) based on the rank he/she obtained in JEE advanced, the rank obtained in JEE main will not affect the counseling for IITs.
Faculty
All the faculties here are highly qualified and has a good understanding of the subject they are teaching. Most of them try teaching the subject in an interesting way and make the students understand what they want them to but few tech in a mechanical way whether the student understands it or not, but there are lots of material in amica and dc++, one can refer from these even if they miss or didn't understand a class.
