Remarks
The positive remark is that the environment here is anti ragging and safe which is the must if you look for a college. The negative remark would be that they let PhD students teach you and they don't know how to teach.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am in Electronics and Computers branch, it is a pretty good branch as if offers both electronics and computers, we get dual options for placement too. The course consists of 60% electronics and 40% computers. This is my second year and so far I can say that this is an amazing branch. In the first year we studied all the basic subjects like Physics, chemistry, mathematics, C++ etc. From the second year onwards we started to dig in our core subjects like Analog electronics, digital electronics, etc. One great thing I find about my course is that It also offers me to study subjects like Manufacturing Processes, in this subject we get an experience of field work which we expect only from mechanical engineers. We were taught how to do welding, milling and many other. We also have to make projects like building a line follower robot, mangonel, and in 3rd year we have to make a cap stone projects too.
Placement Experience
The placement opportunities are very good here. Many big companies like Samsung, Amazon, Arsecium, Tata come here. There are majorly two types of companies, the ones which will take you on the basis of your branch and others which offers you finance related jobs. Average package for computer branch is somewhere between 7 to 8 lakhs. The mechanical branch has a very good placement probability. Well, in 3rd year some companies do visit Thapar for internships, mostly only for computer branch.
College Events
We have 48 societies here, so there are a number of fests and events throughout the year. The main fests are from societies Saturnalia, Frosh, Orion. Annual fest is Saturnalia, in this we have people coming for standup comedies, music night, dance competition etc. The Annual techno fest is Orion. The inter college fest is Urja, it is a sports event offering competitions in football, cricket, basketball, etc.
Fee Structure And Facilities
It is quite expensive. For computer branches, the tution fee per semester is 1, 57, 900 and the hostel fee is 43, 000. Also we have additional mess fee which is 16, 000. So for 4 years it would be around 20 lakhs.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are scholarship based on your 12th marks, JEE rank, CGPA. The 12th standard scholarship is that your percentile should be greater than 85 percent and your CGPA should be above 9. 5 only then you can get a scholarship easily.
Campus Life
There are many societies here. There are around 48 socites. They are in areas of dance, technical, music, sports, and many more. Some of the famous societies are CCS, Urja, NOX, these deals with computer coding, inter college fest, and dance respectively. Gender ratio is 5 girls in 10 boys. I must say there is no ragging taking place here. This is a very important thing for a college, and they take serious actions if found something like ragging here.
Hostel Facilities
Yes, I have opted for hostel. In the first year, I have been in a 3 seater room, the room was pretty good, it was freshly painted and the storage space was also good. Now, in 2nd year, I have a 2 seater accommodation. The room is small compared to my previous room but is spacious, like I got a cupboard and my bed has a box inside it. There are many hostels here, some of them are old and some are constructed in recent years. The recent ones are luxurious, they are centrally air conditioned, their washrooms are amazing and the rooms are fabulous.
Alumni/Alumna
People here are very helpful, sweet and kind. I have got to know many seniors here, and they are so helpful, like you can ask them anything and they won't disrespect you or make fun of you, instead they will give full efforts to help you out.
Admission
I gave JEE exam, scored average marks in that. I also have other exams like COMEDk, entrance exams for colleges like Manipal, VIT, etc. Thapar University take admissions on the basis of your JEE rank. I also cleared VIT and MANIPAL. I checked NIRF ranks and saw that Thapar has was on 19th rank and others were in 30s or something. I was offered Electronics and Computers in Thapar, it is a pretty good branch as if offers both electronics and computers, we get dual options for placement too. This branch made me make my mind for joining Thapar Institute.
Faculty
Mostly, the profeesors and lecturers here are IIT graduates, so yes they are quite good and helpful. The main problem I face is in the Tutorial classes, it is basically a question answer class of a particular subject. Mostly, these classes are taken by the PhD students they just do not know how to teach, so that is very difficult to cope up with. Rest all the profeesors are good.
