Remarks
Overall one of the best breeding grounds for under grad students in the country. Driven mostly with the talented pool of students that reach through JEE. A very good nurturing environment provided by academicians, though a lot of scope in creating a more collaborative and progressive view to create one of the world’s best institution.
Course Curriculum Overview
For the first two years, most of the courses and subjects are very academic in nature with more focus on building the theoretical knowledge and gaining the competitive edge across a huge batch of students. However, in my course since the beginning of 3rd year a lot of courses were revamped keeping in view the current industry requirements. Many industry connects were planned, students started collaborating with professors on real-world projects. At the end of 3rd year, there is a compulsory internship (industry/ research) which gives a lot of insights and brings students closer to what actually goes in industry.
Placement Experience
Most of the big companies (MNCs as well as Indian) take part in the placement drive. 70-80% of the students get a good placement out of the college. For Internship though, a limited number of companies used to come through Placement committee, which were mostly grabbed by the few best students of the college. However most of the students manage to get an internship through industry connects
College Events
Annual events are there at the institute level- Kshitij - Technical; Spring Fest - Social and Cultural; These are one of the biggest events in the country with participation from students across the country. The best prt is all these events are organised end to end by student teams itself
Fee Structure And Facilities
Feasible at our point of time, though there has been a recent trend in increase of fees. Since the admission is strictly based on JEE, no donations or additional charges are there. Overall 4.5 Lakh was my total cost incurred on course and hostel fees
Fees and Financial Aid
There is a Merit cum Means scholarship, which gives waiver of tution fees and additional 12k every year. This is limited to students belonging to a mid to low income group. Minimum 7 CGPA to be maintained for additional 12k merit scholarship
Campus Life
Biggest university campus in India. Lush green with forest coverage and minimal pollution, being a small satellite town in WB. Within the campus, there is a different world created by and for the student with activities spanning across Social & cultural, Technology and Sports. Multiple halls of residence compete in different General championships, then there are Annual fests which is popular across the country. There are annual college level and hostel level elections also which give a good exposure to various factors expllored in these areas. Overall an extremely fun place to be with friends for life. Only drawback of the remote location is there is no life outside the campus which students at other campuses enjoy.
Hostel Facilities
Yes, I was allocated Azad hall of residence. Generally the draw happens randomly for hostel and there is one Hall Monitoring committee looking after this. Few of the hostels were quite old at our times, though renovation work was going on.
Alumni/Alumna
It’s all about the relationships you create on the campus. Post passing out, industry does recognise the value of IITians and the alumni network is definitely present. Though a lot more peer to peer connects and networking in industries can be taken up similar to what MBA colleges create.
Admission
I got a rank of 2590 in JEE 2011 (Joint Entrance Exam- one of the toughest entrance examination in the world for High School passouts). IIT Kharagpur, being one of the largest IITs in India had to offer a lot more courses as compared to other IITs. Post the result announcement in May/ Jun 2011, the counselling process started where we had to opt for the courses, which would have been decided basis the merit list preparation on JEE rank. Post 3 rounds of counselling, I was able to secure a seat in B. Tech course for Industrial Engineering
Faculty
The faculty at IIT KGP is amongst one of the best in the country. There are three hierarchy- Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. All courses/ streams have a good mix of experienced professors along with new- age scholars. Most of them carry a post-graduation or PhD degree from renowned institutes of the world. Many of the subjects do have industry use-cases and various examples of how the theoretical knowledge can be applied in real world. However more streamlined efforts should be put by the academia for giving students more case-studies and should be part of the evaluation as well. Though most of the times students themselves create like-minded groups and create innovative solutions for industry.
