Remarks
Having a predilection towards science and mathematics, I wanted to get into one of the best engineering universities in our country and IIT kharagpur was an obvious choice. I grew a lot because of the peer group and the academic environment there. The flexibility and opportunities of pursuing interests outside of your course is what I liked the most about this college. I chose this degree because it was relatively light, syllabus wise and hence I would get ample time to explore other interests and opportunities and grow as an individual.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum was very intricately designed and the major focus was on learning of concepts and problem solving. We had open book exams which meant that if you had not understood the concept, you wouldn't be able to solve it. We had many industrial visits to the plants in haldia among other places. Industry experience was however intensive in our internships which was mandatory in third year and upto you if you wanted to do it in your first or second year. The faculties were very renowned and great researchers along with being really good teachers. One of the most impactful professors was sunando dasgupta who taught mass transfer and transport phenomenon. Rabibrata mukherjee was another such professor who taught us nanotechnology.
Internships Opportunities
I did an internship at DMI Finance as a Data Scientist. I was given the task of building underwriting and behavioral credit risk models. This included the application of NLP along with boosting algorithms. The overall process consisted of an online test and consecutive interviews after qualifying in the online test. The stipend amount keeps on changing by the year.
Placement Experience
The placement and job opportunities are ample. People can apply to jobs in roles outside of their department. Major companies that come here are mckinsey, BCG, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Google, American Express, EXL, Barclays, Tower Research, City Bank, Deuche Bank, ITC, HUL, Reddy labs, Capital One etc.The placement committee comprises of students selected through a rigorous process and they fight for bringing different companies and for more intakes by each company. Notable alumnis from my college are Mr Sundar Pichai(CEO Google), Mr Arvind Kejriwal(CM Delhi). No startups as of yet. The Entrepreneurship culture in my college is at a very nascent stage.
College Events
The campus is situated in a not so developed city so there isn't much to do outside of the campus which makes the college community very closely knit. There is a general championship for technology, sports and cultural in which students representing their Hall clash with students from other halls in various events. This is a great way to delve into something new for example, say dramatics. Apart from this, the college hosts Asia's one of the biggest cultural fests named the Spring Fest. This fest sees an enormous number of footfall as well as participation in different events. The whole campus is on a different energy during these 3-4 days. We have kshitij as our technical fest which conducts events on a spectrum ranging from robowars to coding to flying your own remote controlled plane. Apart from these two, there are several other fests that are conducted by respective departments as well as different societies such as entrepreneurship-cell, alumni-cell etc.
Campus Life
We had a state of the art library with ac, computers and almost any book that one would need in their course. The whole campus had good wifi connection. The labs were well equipped with different and new equipments. There is a huge emphasis on sports in this campus and there are seperate grounds for hockey, football and cricket. There is a jnan ghosh stadium where people come to practice different forms of athletics or simply for an evening or morning run. There are three common basketball courts in the campus and almost all hostels have their own basketball courts inside as well. We have a well equipped two story gym, squash court, badminton court, table tennis and lawn Tennis courts, many courts for volleyball and a very well maintained swimming pool.
Hostel Facilities
Every student is alotted a hostel room and it is his/her choice to find a different accommodation. Kharagpur doesn't have much outside of IIT kharagpur so students usually chose to stay in the hostel. The hostel has excellent wifi connection. The rooms are a bit old as the hostels are since 1950's, but they are decent to live in. It depends on your year, and the hostel you live in that you will get a single, double or triple shared accommodation. The hostel fees are very minimal
