Remarks
Overall, IIT KGP is known for its students and not for its professors or infrastructure or funding.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course curriculum is somewhat relevant. The exam structure is simple 50% end semester exams, 30% mid semester exams and 20% professor's evaluation. Though majority of the grading is done on the basis of how much of an impression a student has on his/her professor, it is not very difficult to score. Regular attendance is the most powerful tool to put a long lasting positive impression on a professor of IIT KGP. Industry specific knowledge is imparted in the final years while there is very limited useful subjects in the first two years. Industrial visits are not organized by the department though there is a compulsory industrial training or internship in the pre-final year.
Placement Experience
Placement is 100% for those who choose to sit in the placement. Though most people interested in Biotechnology go for higher studies abroad as there are NO BIOTECH COMPANIES which visit the campus for internship or placement. Campus placement happens in the non core sector for the students of our department. Non core sector includes Consultancy, Business Management, Web Development, Software etc.
College Events
Spring Fest is the beautiful cultural fest organized in the third week of January. The soothing weather and the amazing event put up a spectacle to remember. Kshitij is our techno-management fest. It witnesses some of the most interesting Technological innovations including robo-wars and gaming competitions. Apart from these there are a number of departmental fests, alumni meet, entrepreneurship summit etc. The scale of each and every one of these fests can be understood by the kind of sponsors they attract which includes big names such as Jio, HDFC, Coca-Cola, SBI, Xiaomi and many more. Comedians such as Biswa, Kenny, Zakir, Kanan Gill and artists like Vishal-Shekar, Amit Trivedi, Shaan and Prateek Kuhad are a regular affair.
Fee Structure And Facilities
It is feasible with a number of provisions for people from weaker economic sections (for whom the tuition fee is waived off and only hostel fee of 70k is charged per year) and for others there are incredible 0 interest loan schemes. Even apart from this a yearly expense of 270000 is less than most other engineering colleges with accomodation.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are a number of scholarship available for the talented people and for the economically backward people. MCM and Aditya Birla scholarships are just two of the many others.
Campus Life
Campus life is as beautiful as it gets. KGP is 2100 acres of greenery and beauty. Gender ratio is highly skewed with 1 girl for 11 boys. Though with increasing number of gender based reserved seats this number is likely to improve in the coming years. There are a whole lot of societies and clubs for practicing anything from coding to debating to photography to management. The quality of these clubs is moderate but if one is interested he/she can reach for the skies.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel rooms are very much backdated but are available for everyone. There are single, double and triple sharing rooms. First years almost invariably get triple sharing after which it is mainly based on luck. One shouldn't have too many expectations from the hostel rooms and food provided in the mess. But the hostel life with so many new friends is unparalleled and will make every other difficult feel like a breeze.
Alumni/Alumna
I was a part of the Students' Alumni Cell of the campus and every year alumni funding increases and last year it was around 10 crores rupees. If the funding is so huge, imagine how helpful the Alumni community is and senior students, through very strict, are very helpful and they protect the juniors like their own siblings.
Admission
IIT or Indian Institute of Technology is the most premiere technical institute in the country. IIT Kharagpur being the oldest of them has a legacy of its own. It is also near my birth place - Kolkata. The admission happens through JEE Advanced, one of the most difficult exams of the world. Biotechnology is the field I chose and I don't regret it one bit. I hadn't chosen for Biology in my High School. So, it was scary at first but eventually I developed the interest and understood the beauty of the subject.
Faculty
The faculty of the Department of Biotechnology is more or less the worst People you'll see in your academic life. They are highly qualified and experienced in their respective fields. Some of them are good teachers as well. But the biggest issue is the ego problems of most of the professors. The average age of the professors is around 45-50 years. All the professors are required to have a PhD degree at least in the field so there's no doubt about their knowledge and background.
