Remarks
1) Easy admissions for SARRC and Gulf Students, with no JEE and direct admissions based on your 12 grades. Scope of Engineering is very less in a country like Nepal.2) Good infrastructure, and facilities for students.3) Near to home.4) Fine education with good teachers.
Course Curriculum Overview
1) The college offers integrated program with Trinity College of Dublin, for the batch of 2020, we had to study 2+2, 2 years of common subjects and 2 years of our specialization. First two years we studied subjects like Manufacturing Process(Mechanical), Solids and Structures(Civil), Thermodynamics(Chemical), Environment, etc with some Computer subjects. Every branch had to go through these subjects. But I think this criteria has been changed and now there are less common subjects and one year of common subjects.2)The focus was given on new technologies and the electives were good too, but the practical knowledge was very less among the teachers and even lesser was taught to students. For electives we had subjects like Machine Learning, which students above 8 cg could only apply for, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security and Computer Vision. Many students who wanted to opt for ML were not given a chance due to their cg criteria.3) The only place where we practically exposed was that of Manpro, where we had a 3 hour lab session. We were taught welding, carpentering, and other things. But being a computer student it was no use to us. At the end of four years also students lack basic C++, Java knowledge. More emphasis was given on just to get grades in paper. 4) The faculties of Civil, Mechanical are really good. The professors and teachers are highly skilled and professional, they value time and money of students. But teachers, not all don't have practical knowledge about the subjects they are teaching. They just read out slides and fail to help students who need some help. The good teachers of computer department are Dr.Sangita Roy, Dr. Geeta Kasana, Dr. A.K Verma, Ms. Anika Gupta, Dr. Shreelekha, Prof. Maninder Singh(HOD), Dr.Shalini Batra. Overall the best faculty comes from School of Mathematics, School of Humanities, and School of Energy and Environment. Dean of Academic Affairs S.S Bhatia, Associate DOAA N.Tejo Prakash, are the gem of Thapar. 5) This is specially for students coming from countries like Nepal, Kuwait, Qatar, Sri Lanka to study in Thapar, that you might face a lot of peer pressure and hard time clearing your basics. As we had not given JEE, we were not told how difficult the first two years would be. Ours was first batch from Nepal, most of us failed the first semester due to the gap between studies in India and Nepal. This was very difficult for all of us. Continous judgement was passed on how dumb we were, and a feeling of inferiority was among us. After two years of struggle we were able to match the pace of students over there. It took a lot of me to even get a 6.8 as I had to take two summers for redoing my grades. It used to be very difficult. The junior batches also face the same problem, and even the recent junior from our country faced this problem. Also many companies fail to take you, as you are a Nepali student. WIPRO, AMAZON, L&T, did not allow foreign students to sit for placements.

Placement Experience
1)Around 3-4 companies come for summer training during third year, and after that every branch has to go a compulsory six months industrial training or has to do capstone project. For civil it is 6th semester, for mechanical and mechatronics it is 5th, for computers, ece, enc, electrical and eic it is 8th, and for coe-mba also it is 8th. Companies like JP Morgan, Arcesium, Rubik, De Shaw, Microsoft come for the summer internship. The CG Criteria is 7. 2) The criteria is one placement for one student, and if 75% of students are placed than they can sit for other placements also. The highest package of our batch is of Microsoft of 40 Lakh offered to 5 students, and the lowest is offered by Infosys which is 3.3 Lakh. Mostly Civil, Electrical and Mechanical students have very less placements. 3)The placements are usually good, most of the students who have above 7cg get placed but students below 7 cg fail to get a good package or are subjected to mass recruitment. But I failed to get placed due to the large number of students the university takes for one batch. I had my cg as 6.8, but due to large competition and being biased , many students don't get proper jobs. A lot of unfair means is used during the test process, and many deserving students are unable to clear it. This happened during the placement test of Deliotee, Wipro, where most of the students cleared the test due to cheating.4) A group of talented friends who are good at coding, and have much much skills have failed to get a good job due to cg criteria. The only problem I am stating here is that the private colleges enroll large number of students, but fail to give them good attention and placements. This is not a problem of my university, but many private colleges who take huge amount of fees but fail to give the basic facilities to students. Every year this intake increases, the quality is decreasing and the job opportunities get limited. More focus is given on grades, and not the skills, and this becomes a major problem during placements. 5) Many companies don't allow foreign students to sit in their placements.6) The stress is really high during placements seasons, the students who don't get placed slip into depression, and there is always comparison between students. One of our senior committed suicide because of 10 rejections.7) The overall placement goes till July, and around 70% of students get placed and also the placements isn't handled by students but by our placement head.8)Many students feel the placements are based on luck, and usually their skills and talent get ignored during this time. Even after preparing so much, students lack communication skills or don't get their name in test due to CG criteria. I had prepared for many tests, few got clear but in those where there used to be graders then they would be given chances. A lot of biasedness is done, and the whole semester is very stressful. It feels like the end of the world.
Fees and Financial Aid
There is scholarship offered to students who are exceptionally good in studies, and have maintained their cg. Every 4-5 students get it from each branch, and usually need to maintain their cg for the scholarship. It usually goes up to 3 lakh, and is distributed every year.
Campus Life
1) Infrastructures are the best thing abut Thapar and the new hostels have AC, Wifi, personal washroom. The HOSTELS Iconic -M(boys) and N(girls) are really good. The single seaters have shared bathroom with one person, while the double seaters share their washroom with four person. The Wifi needs a login id and pw, that is each student needs to login into the wifi personally. There is WIFI everywhere in the campus. The food in the new hostels are handled by SODEXOO, which in boys hostel are not good as compared to girls hostel. The old hostels have better food facilities and there is a night canteen. Every hostel has one night canteen which operates from 6:30- 1 am in the night. We get eggs, maggi, parantha, ice cream, chocolates, chips, sandwiches, etc. Not every old hostel has AC. 2) The sports facilities are really good, with one swimming pool, basketball courts and cricket grounds. Many sports fest also take place.3) The academic blocks are around 1 km away from the boys hostel, and around 500 m away from girls hostel. There are e-rickshaws, and open rickshaws available all the time for students. The academic blocks are good and well equipped but the new computer block is highly equipped, and very very high functional. It has many facilities and good lecture halls.4) There is a complex called COS, where we can get daily groceries, restaurants, open air theaters, salons. It is near the boys hostel. 5) The library is really good, it has a capacity fro around 1500 students, it is newly built and has many facilities like GD Room, Wifi, lift, new books etc.
Hostel Facilities
1) The fees for first two years was 2 times more than any normal Indian student, but from the third year we were charged the same.2) The fee is pretty high, and the mess for one semester depends on the hostel. It is around 18k for one semester, and we can get refund if the amount is left.3) The mess is vegetarian, but for breakfast we get eggs. We are allowed to bring non veg to our rooms. The breakfast has very much varieties like parantha, eggs, milk, vermicelli, coffee, salad. The lunch usually has rice, one vegetable/dal, curd, salad, and soft drinks in summers. The dinner has roti, rice, vegetable, curd, salad, pickle, and one sweet dish, soup if it is winters.4) The rooms are very clean and nice in the new hostels and girls hostel. But AC is not available in every room. There are cleaners, and helper aunties who take care of sanitation and come to clean rooms daily.
