Kshitij Gupta's Review On Indian Institute Of Engineering Science And Technology - [IIEST] Shibpur, Howrah

I researched about the institute as much as I could. Wikipedia, you tube, and other websites like collegedunia etc. One of the major reasons was the NIRF ranking. The institute was ranked 21 in 2018, 19 in 2019 and now is ranked 21 in 2020. Had a decent placement package and placement percentage. I loved the campus of the university as well. It had a lush green campus and a great number of operating and new clubs. Had great sports facilities too.d by the institute and the clubs of the institute, biggest of which is REBECA, the cultural fest of IIEST, Shibpur. Others are Instruo,TedXIIESTShibpur, Oitokaan which are the big ones, and a few other events which are not as big. Also all the departmental fests.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of IIEST, Shibpur was ranked 7th among other Mechanical Engineering departments in the country. The course syllabus here is the standard one which is taught everywhere. The institute has a good exposure to the industry as well. Have a decent opportunity for internships. The faculty is excellent. Highly educated and very experienced. Some notable facilities are Dr. Parta Pratim Dey(HOD), Dr. Bijan Kumar Mondal, Dr Shantanu Kumar Karmakar, Assistant Prof. Bidyut Pal.

Visiting companies include Tata Steel, Tata Power, Vedanta, CESC, Maruti Suzuki, Daikin India, Elegant Marine, Deloitte, PWC, ZS Associates, IBM, TCS, Wipro, Accenture, Saint Gobain, Denso, etc.

The biggest one is REBECA, the cultural fest of IIEST, Shibpur. It is held annually in March or April. It is one of the biggest college festivals in the Eastern region of the country. The Technical fest is Instruo. It is the largest technical fest of Kolkata and Howrah. Both of them have enormous footfall. Many big artists have performed in Rebeca. Many other institutes from all over the country participate in both these events. TedXIIESTShibpur and Oitokaan(event by the music society Euphony, of the institute) are the other big ones. Oitokaan is to showcase the musical talents of artists, wherein they perform their original productions. Various famous artist across the state participate in Oitokaan. Satrang, Knockout, Institute Premier league, Sengupta Premier league, and many other events are organized by the students of the Institute. Also all the departmental fests. Various clubs are Reflexobeta, Euphony, Litsoc, Debsoc, Catharsis, LeThespians, Robodarshan, SCAGE, CodeIIEST, Quizmaniac Beings, Society of Games and Sports.

The association of Alumni of the university, called GAABESU, provides scholarship to students over their performance in sports and academics in the institute.

It is the second oldest college of the country. Was established in 1856, is 164 years old. So the buildings are bound to be old. There are 20+ classrooms for dept. of Mech. Engg. The labs are well equipped with appratus. The campus is 123 acres and lush green. Two big grounds (oval and lords), volleyball and badminton courts (not professional) for all halls and hostels. But construction of both a professional volleyball and badminton court has been sanctioned this year. Also there is Netaji Bhavan for badminton court. There is a gymkhana for gymming and calisthenics. A swimming pool as well. A basketball court. Wifi is available in all the halls and hostels providing decent internet speed. The campus has a very old clocktower. It has three lakes and few more ponds here and there. Has many canteens and shops in the campus. Stationery shops are at NB and near the Institute hall. The institute hall is old and comfortably big but not as big as would be expected. Also there are many statues of notae personalities all over the campus. There is a student's recreation center built solely for student activities.

There are total of 17 student accommodation buildings in total. 5 halls and 12 hostels. The hostel has decent facilities. It has good wifi. 4 students are accomodated in a single room. Food quality varies a little.
