Remarks

IIT Kharagpur is one of the top-rated engineering colleges in India. Since it is located in a rural area, I was able to participate in a huge number of co-curricular activities which might nit have been the case in case it was in a metro city. Also, a large number of courses are available to choose from. The admissions start a week after the declaration of JEE Advanced results and the classes start in mid-late august.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

Particularly for Mechanical Engineering, the student to faculty ratio is good. typically, we have around 180 students in a single year's batch for mechanical engineering. Teaching is a mix of theory as well as practical courses. The subjects like Heat transfer, IC Engines, Mechanics of solids are very interesting. The subjects are easy to handle given you prepare for them at least a week before exams.

Internships Opportunities

3.5

Internships are a compulsory part of the course and need to be done in the summer break after 3rd year is completed. Some companies come to college for offering internships and also offer pre-placement offers. Also, students can arrange for internships by themselves.

Placement Experience

3.5

placements start in between the 7th and 8th semester i.e. December and continue till March. A total of 400+ companies come for placement offering 1300+ offers. The highest package offered by Indian companies for placement in India was around 40 lacs in 2017 but that has gone up considerably since. The average package for the batch was 11-12 lacs.

Fees and Financial Aid

A lot of scholarships are available based on merit and need-based. Also, being an IIT, a lot of banks offer student loans for fee payment. The payment is done primarily through net banking. Placement season starts on 1st December. However, a lot of presentations from companies take place in October and November. Avg. CTC for Mechanical Engineering was around 8-10 LPA. But then, most of the people tend to be involved in other fields such as AI/ML, data sciences, etc.

Campus Life

5

The cultural annual fest is known as spring fest which spans over 4 days. Students from other colleges come to participate in a lot of competitions in dance, music, arts, etc. Every night we have a gig from someone recognized in the music industry (we had KK, Agnee, Euphoria, and 1 more). Tech fest is known as Kshitiz and spans 3 days with tech exhibition, talk shows from industry leaders, and night shows which include, music shows, standup comedy, and EDM. All of the study material required is available in digital format through various sources including the library. Classrooms are Ari conditioned and bus facilities are available to go to classrooms. A large numbers of societies/clubs are present which have activities going on throughout the year.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Hostel cost is included in the fee itself. Rooms can be individual, dual sharing, and triple sharing depending upon the year and hall of residence. Meals in hall mess is of substandard quality. However, a lot of canteens and restaurants are available throughout the day starting from 7 AM till 4 AM.

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

It's my decision from class 12 that I will do civil engineering, so I chose the civil branch, the course curriculum is well and the teaching level is good but the main problem is lab, there is very limited classes for lab, so I think they should improve there.

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
