Remarks
I chose this college first of all because of the course Microbiology which was very interesting and secondly the location of the college. Admission started in the month of july when the DU released the first cut off and I got admission in the first cut off. The admission criteria was the percentage scored in Physics, chemistry and Biology it should be 91 for general category. After reaching college students were supposed to go to concerned departments and take the form and fill it up and wait. Then after some time everyone got assembled in the auditorium where the names of the students were taken and students was supposed to go and submit the fee.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because of my specific interest in biology and relation of this course to the medical field. There were total 6 semesters of 6 months each. Mostly classes used to start at 8:45 am according to the time table, At 12:30 we had our lunch break till 1:30 and then the practicals used to start which used to end around 5 pm. Faculties were highly qualified. Nobody liked the way they used to teach in the class, they just used to open presentations and read from them and expect you to know everything and understand everything if you don't then they don't leave any stone unturned in humiliating you in front of the whole class. Teachers used to shout at us for even small mistakes in practical files because they expected that we should know everything about the subject without them teaching us. Exams used to held on time but the level of a microbiology exam is very tough to pass.
Internships Opportunities
College did not provide us with any internships so I independently applied for and got selected at Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. My department was Forest Pathology department and my work was on plant and trees fungus called basidiomycetes. I used to prepare culture and grow the fungus on them and study them.
Placement Experience
As I was in science department there were no college placements for us. But the commerce departments had several companies coming and few of them even got placed in companies like E and Y. Students can sit for the placement in the third year. My plans after graduation was to pursue my master's degree because after bachelors there is not much good offers. You can get a job at a lab but that will require some experience so I suggest doing M. Sc. after B. Sc.
College Events
Campus life at Gargi is awesome. There were various societies like KSHITIJ-the street play sociey, NAZAKAT- the Indian dance society, SPARX- the choreography society, IRIS- the photography society, HUES- the art society. REVERIE-The annual fest of the Gargi College is among top ten fests of DU, it is held in the month of February. SCINTILLATIONS is the annual science fest held in winter time. ZISTATVA- the annual Diwali mela is a time when there is lot of food shopping and fun at the campus. Syllabus books are hard to find in the library because students grab them as the semester starts and keep them. Classrooms were large and had fans but sometimes in summer it used to become very hot and fan didn't work. There were sports day organised and various sports activities to take part in. On social media there are pages like Reverie and Gargi Placement Cell.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The course is for 3 years and we had to pay 12000 per year. There were many scholarships but only few students got them because of the lack of information. Apart from that there's no financial assistance from college side. Job opportunities for the science department was worse. Whereas commerce department has various placement options.
Hostel Facilities
There was no hostel facility in the campus so there are various PGs and flats nearby in areas like Andrews Ganj, South extension, Gautam Nagar, GK. I had rented a PG in south extension area and it was fine we used to get breakfast, lunch and dinner but the taste was average.
