Remarks
Its the only university purely of economics in this country. Its location of Bangalore gives it even more advantage. The 44 acre campus and state of the art infrastructure is not found in many govt colleges. The fees is also affordable comparing it it with other economic courses as new as that of BASE. Currently the admissions happen through Central university common entrance test. Its a all India test and the selection is merit based. Do remember that there is reservation based on both caste and state. Around 50% of the seats are reserved for Karnataka candidates only. The fees for reserved category students is less than the general students. It has a new course which is highly focused on mathematics and statistics. Also it is a state government university. Programming languages like R-python SQL are also taught which makes the course very competitive. you can visit base.ac.in for more info. Also, the college is active on LinkedIn and Twitter.
Course Curriculum Overview
It's a new and well design course that caters to research as well as the corporate sector. The emphasis on math's statistics and econometrics makes it very relevant in present times as well as competitive. There are also some good electives like behavioral economics, operational research, health economics, labor eco etc which gives a unique touch to BASE. The faculty of base is good. There are processors from Madras school of economics, IGIDR, University of California, IFMR, Pondicherry University, Calcutta university, IIT M among others. Due to the location advantage, BASE in the past have also had guest faculties from IIM Bangalore. Having said this it should be noted that most of the faculty are young. BASE has very few faculty with decades of experience. Guest faculties are good though. Faculties are very approachable to all students and are student friendly. The boys to girls ratio in our batch was around 20 boys to 30 girls. It differs from batch to batch. Exams are timely.
Internships Opportunities
The internships session is going on for the first batch. Many students have earned internships in reputed organizations. It is too Early to comment on the the overall experience. Some places are giving stipend of 10 to 20000 per month. Again it is too early to comment on internships or placements but the scene looks optimistic. The college has a base placement cell (BPC), largely run by students, which is very efficient and gives students ample opportunities to show their talents. with time, there would also be good brand value associated with the degree. A strong network of alumni in the future would also improve the internship and placements for the coming batch, provided BASE maintains it well.
Placement Experience
As I have already mentioned, college focuses on placements after the masters course. Since no masters students have graduated till now, we cannot comment on the placements. Internships are good though, the first batch of BSc economics went to places like Bosch, ABB, Statistical department of GOK, Toyota Motors, Karvy, Deshpande Foundation, among other places. Some of them have already got internships in reputed places like RBI, NABARD, PwC, IIT R, EY etc. This is a very good start considering that this is the first batch of this university doing masters. Many people aspire to go in the corporate sector. Some are interested in PhD and some for govt exams. The college tries to cater to all these three verticals.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees in 2020 was around 92000 per year. It includes Hostel charges are approximately 12,000 a year. Food has to be paid by students on a monthly basis. It's a fully residential program so paying the hostel fees is mandatory. The fees has increased from the first batch that started in 2017. With increasing costs and decreasing funds from the government to many educational institutions the fees may increase more but there is no confirmation to it. There are some scholarship for reserved category students from government of Karnataka. But I am not sure of the details they should be checked on college website. There is a scholarship for masters student based on their marks. BASE has not had any placements till now. The first batch of masters would graduate in 2022 you and only post that can we comment on the placements. The internships have been good. Students have gone to various corporate institutions and academic centers.
Campus Life
Not many festivals are conducted as of now. The colleges relatively new with less students. Also we are in lock drop down for more than a year now. There are many clubs and committees. From debate, art and culture, env. , sports, placement, mess cell etc. Classrooms are world class. They can beat most of the corporate offices too. All of them are air conditioned, individual chairs, spacious halls, large glass Windows, fitted projector screens, roof mounted lights and touch screen desktop inside the podium are some I can remember now. You will love the classroom. The library is huge but there are not a lot of books right now considering less number of students. The institution spends generously in books and will improve its library over time. College has a official Twitter and LinkedIn account. you can also mail to the mail ids provided in the website base.ac.in
Hostel Facilities
Food included. Hostels are among the best memories you will have. Rooms are large, spacious and airy. View from the terrace is also amazing, with one side full of trees (and also the stadium of sports authority of India) and you can see the city buildings and metro from the other side. The hostels are new and well furnished. Every student gets a Two door metal almirah, multi compartment study table, chair, bed and shoe rack. There are washrooms and washing areas at each floor which are neat and well maintained. Individual Geiser in each bathroom. Food is ok, not the best but not worst either. It has a good balance of south and north Indian food. There are markets nearby, at walking distances which were already established because of national law school Bangalore and ISEC being very close to base. BASE and NLSIU are just meters some 50 meters apart from each other. Hostels are compulsory as it is a fully residential course even if you are staying in Bangalore before joining BASE.
